062: The Shock Of The Lightning

Do not let anyone tell you that turquoise and gold aren’t an electrifying combination!

Name: Warlock Dice | Chain Lightning

Description: This is a standard-size set of not-quite-sharp edge metal dice. They are painted a lovely turquoise color with gold lightning marks carved into every face (and wrapping around the dice). The font is similar to Futura ND with a mild slant on the ‘5’ digit only. The numbers are inked gold to match the lightning marks which contrasts nicely with the greenish-blue background. For once I think gold was a great choice for the font color. The d10s have beveled waists for a change and the d6 has shaved corners to make it… look fancier? The 6 and 9 faces use underbars to indicate their orientation.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 21.7mm (Point->Point) 26.7mm

Where did they come from: No idea whatsoever. I can’t find any trace of them in my saved receipts or order histories across various sites.

How much did they cost: $25 or so based on another set of these dice in a different color that I bought from Dark Elf.

Material / color: Metal (Zinc) painted turquoise with gold numbers / details

Quality: Very good

Readability: Fair. I can barely read them from 4 feet away on the rug.

Value: Very good value if I did in fact pay $25 for them. They’d be a good deal at $30 – $35 in a game store.

Overall Rating: 8/10

Casting Tsunami (8th level conjuration): A wall of water springs into existence at a point you choose within range. You can make the wall up to 300 feet long, 300 feet high, and 50 feet thick. The wall lasts for the duration.

When the wall appears, each creature within its area must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 6d10 bludgeoning damage, or half as much damage on a successful save.

At the start of each of your turns after the wall appears, the wall, along with any creatures in it, moves 50 feet away from you. Any Huge or smaller creature inside the wall or whose space the wall enters when it moves must succeed on a Strength saving throw or take 5d10 bludgeoning damage. A creature can take this damage only once per round. At the end of the turn, the wall’s height is reduced by 50 feet, and the damage creatures take from the spell on subsequent rounds is reduced by 1d10. When the wall reaches 0 feet in height, the spell ends.

A creature caught in the wall can move by swimming. Because of the force of the wave, though, the creature must make a successful Strength (Athletics) check against your spell save DC in order to move at all. If it fails the check, it can’t move. A creature that moves out of the area falls to the ground.

When the wall appears, each creature within the area takes: 28 bludgeoning damage on a failed save and is pushed 50 feet away the first round. The effect continues for the next 5 rounds and the damage diminishes by 1d10 each subsequent round.

(This is another fun excuse for rolling dice)

Random Tables rolls:

Rare Eberron Gods: 91 – The Keeper of Secrets, God of Knowledge. The Keeper of Secrets is a mysterious deity who is said to possess knowledge beyond that of any mortal or god. He is often depicted as an enigmatic figure shrouded in shadows, with his face hidden from view. He rarely intervenes in the affairs of mortals but when he does, it is usually to provide them with wisdom or insight. Those who seek out the Keeper’s secrets are warned not to ask too many questions, lest they find themselves faced with more than they can handle.

Fae Bargains: 38 – Cats meows now sound like orc battle cries to you.

Final Thoughts: The first time I saw these lightning dice, I of course went right out and bought a set. Then I found them in other colors and bought 2 more sets, and finally bought this set in green/gold because I really like the color / contrast. (one thing to know about me is that I love colorful things). I compared this set of dice with one of the other sets of lightning dice and realized that they all have the exact same lightning pattern carved into the dice. This lowered my opinion of these dice slightly. I would love it if the lightning patterns were somewhat random, or even if there were a handful of different lightning patterns so that they feel at least a little bit unique. I’m sure there’s one place in China that makes these dice and they have one way of making them with one set of molds that they use. Oh well, at least I have great color choices. I’ve seen at least a dozen different color combinations online, I’m sure there are more.

The dice are a standard size with the exception of the d20 being a little bit bigger and sitting on the precipice of the range of perfect d20 sizes. It’s not a chonk d20 but it proudly stands beside them. The dice roll nicely with the exception of the d6 which is a bit “flippidy”.. which is not a real word but accurately describes how the die bounces and slides around with its beveled corners. These dice have a nice weight to them that I’ve missed lately with all of the resin dice I’ve been reviewing. These dice suffer a little bit in visibility / clarity with the gold numbers being slightly obscured by the gold lightning. I wonder if having slightly different colors for the numbers and lightning would have helped. The lighting effect wrapping around the dice makes for a very appealing visual.

I would recommend you pick up a set of these dice, faithful reader. Especially if you can find a good color combination that appeals to you and if you can find them at a good price. They are currently on sale at Dark Elf for $17.50 in black/blue with white numbers. That’s a great price. If I didn’t already have that exact set I’d buy them before finishing this sentence. Look for some of these dice. They’re well made, look great and are very affordable.
