022: Bizarre Love Triangle

What a fantastic deal on a set of sharp edge resin dice. Oh wait…

Name: Love Song (Sharp Edge Inclusion Dice)

Description: A set of 7 sharp-edge resin dice made from pink tinted resin with holofoil inclusions. We are back to somewhat common fonts for the numbering with this set using a TNR adjacent font. (I always write “<font name>-adjacent” because while I’m a font nerd, I’m not great at recognizing the little details of various fonts. I can tell Helvetica from it’s low-rent knockoff cousin Arial and tell Futura from Papyrus but I can’t go deep into the weeds to describe what sets similar fonts apart). The numbers are colored in a redish-orange color that works very well with the mild pink tint of the resin.

The font uses an underbar on the 6 and 9 faces (which is almost always the correct decision) to set them apart. This blog is an underbar stan!

All edges and vertices are very sharp, which is important when you’re selling dice that you call “sharp edge inclusion dice”. yadda yadda yadda d4 caltrop foot step hospital etc…

Size: d20: (Face->Face) 20.9 mm (Point->Point) 25.8 mm

Where did they come from: Dark Elf Dice (I’ve bought several sets of sharp edge inclusion dice from Dark Elf. They’re the best value for the money if you’re looking for a set of them.

How much did they cost:  $22.50 (marked down for being b-grade dice)

Material / color: Resin, clear with pink tint, blue-green holofoil inclusions, redish-orange numbering

Quality: Decent. There are mold lines on most of the dice, a few vertices are chipped off, and there’s a tiny bubble hole on the d6. There’s a reason that these were on sale.

Readability: fair. They’re not hard to read on the table in front of you, even in low light thanks to the nearly-clear resin but you aren’t reading them from 8 feet away on the rug… or at least I couldn’t just now when I tried to.

Value: Fair. This is a reasonable price for a set with noted flaws. You’d really have to pay attention at the table to notice the imperfections.

Overall Rating: 6/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 39 rolls

Ten d20 rolls: 11, 4, 18, 9, 14, 20, 6, 17, 5, 19 (12.3 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 15, 14, 14, 14, 14, 13 (80 total!) A Condescending human barbarian from the Wayferer foothills who just wants their money back

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and Point Buy totals to: 69.

Random Tables rolls:

Town Gossip: 95 – The lake has a large squid. It has taken three boats in the last month.

NPC Traits 18 – If a man, the NPC has a surprisingly large butt/hips.

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way)

Final Thoughts: I bought these dice knowing that they had a few flaws. I have faith that Dark Elf Dice wouldn’t sell flawed dice for full price, nor without disclosing the flaws. The $22.50 price tag was too good to pass up though (Hi, I’m a dice goblin, it’s been 6 days since my last dice purchase…). I still like the dice quite a bit and I needed more sharp edge resin dice in the red/pink color space. Doesn’t everyone color coordinate dice for their characters? The trade-off was worth it for me. I wouldn’t pay full price for a set with these flaws though, the dice goblin in me isn’t powerless to the addiction.

I really like the reddish pink tint to these and I’m a total sucker for a good holofoil inclusion. That blue/green/golden tint that flashes in the right light… I’ll take that all day long at any table. The reddish-orange ink used for the numbers is a bit strange. In the photos above it looks red full stop. When I hold the dice up to my face, the ink looks orange with only the slightest hint of red.I would like to see what these look like with bright pink numbers though. I’ll never shy away from pink on dice. I’ve never had a real favorite color (for things in general) I just like things that are colorful and these dice are colorful. I have two sets of metal pink dice that are very pink that I really like as well. They’ll make their way to the review queue in due time.

In summary: buy more dice! There are bargains out there to be had. Find some dice that make you excited to roll them at the table. Eschew “virtual” dice and get yourself some physical math rocks. Even if you only play online / through a VTT / video chat / postal mail / carrier pigeon / prison visitor center phone with the glass that separates you. Get some dice and roll those things for the serotonin that’s there for the taking.
