Rating my Dice again

Is it safe to come out yet?

I guess I just couldn’t stay away

Let’s approach this in the format of a FAQ:

I’m glad that you’re back. Why did you leave? Well, the original site (ratemydice.com) was something that a friend very generously set up for me one day when we were just chatting about me being a total dice goblin. We were laughing about my love of dice and my developing opinions on them. I said jokingly that I should start giving my opinions on dice to the Internet (who never asked for them) and my friend registered a domain and paid for two years of a WordPress hosted site for me and threw me the keys. I don’t consider myself a writer by any stretch of my wildest imagination but I have developed quite a dice collection and along with it, some strong opinions on ttRPG dice as well as on the capitalization of the acronym “TTRPG”

It was all going well and I built it up to over 100 dice posts on ratemydice.com before my friend just… up and vanished. He abandoned his job, his girlfriend, his apartment, his cats, plenty of his belongings, and disappeared. He had paid for two years of hosting costs for ratemydice.com so when that time was up and he didn’t renew it, all of that content was lost. No one knew where he went and he wasn’t answering phone/email/text/carrier pigeons so I couldn’t even take over paying for the hosting costs to keep the site going.

I’m sad that I lost all of that content but it was all free to me from the start. It just represented a lot of my time spent doing something I kind of liked. I didn’t even think to back any of it up myself after he left. Where ever he is, I hope he’s doing well and battling his demons with valor and strength. I appreciate what he helped me start.

Why did the name change to ratemydice.net? Good question. The old domain name “ratemydice.com” was not in active use but it was still being held by the the previous hosting company (or a domain registrar.) When I inquired about buying it, they wanted $811/year for it. My opinions and dumb ttRPG jokes are certainly not worth that much money so I got “ratemydice.net” instead for $6/year and spent the difference on fancy hats. Score!

What would it take for you to switch to exclusively using dull-edge plastic dice for your ttrpg gaming? Umm… a lot. World peace? Rid US voting districts of gerrymandering? Mandatory retirement for government officials at age 70 with no exceptions. Socialized Medicine? My body re-developing the metabolism I had in high school? Extremely unlikely. Next question!

What’s going to change with the new site?
Another good question, thanks for asking! Not much. I’m going to change the information I give about the dice and swap out some of the jokes / silly nonsense in the dice rating template. Make up more excuses to roll dice… Overall, it’s still just pictures, descriptions, data and my opinions about the dice I own.

What about the old dice that you’ve already reviewed? I’m sure I’ll loop back through several of my old sets and review them again. Do me a favor and pretend you didn’t notice that they’re repeats though.

How often are you buying new dice? Valid question. I have so many different types of dice now (metal, resin, stone, hollow, liquid-core, chonky, etc….) that I rarely browse the dice company websites. (Update: 9/2025 – this is an absolute lie. I still shop for dice as often as I ever did) I’m mostly looking for something that I haven’t seen before, something new from companies that I like (shout out to Critical Role!) or boutique dice makers like Allelenyan, Chort’s Hoard, Flying Horseduck, and Lizardcatcreations to see what they’re releasing in their next drop. I’ve been backing a few dice Kickstarter campaigns lately as well:
2024: Four Kickstarter campaigns for dice, one for a TTRPG carrying case
2025: Threee Kickstarter campaigns for dice (so far)

Are there any dice out there that you want to buy but haven’t found yet? I love this question, thanks for asking! There are a few ‘white whale‘ dice out there that I’m looking for:
1. A full set of Aluminum dice, especially if they were slightly larger than standard size… maybe with a d20 size of 23-25mm. I’ve seen a few ugly sets of Aluminum dice online but haven’t found a nice set yet. Update: Flying Horseduck to the rescue. ETA: late 2025
2. Affordable Tungsten dice (even just a chonk d20). Update: Flying Horseduck to the rescue. ETA: late 2025
3. A Chonk gemstone d20. I don’t love my gemstone sets but I want to find a chonk d20 (~35-40mm) in a stone that I like (not you Lapis Lazuli)
4. A Chonk d20 (~35mm) made from regular Dichroic Glass
5. A Chonk d20 (~35mm) made from frosted Dichroic Glass
6. A set of frosted Dichroic glass dice. Another player at my table has a set and the way that they glow makes them gorgeous to look at. See Post 40.
7. More facet-cut glass dice like the set from URWizards’ Kickstarter campaign from the summer of 2024. Oh how I wish they would use a better font.
8. A set of Stainless Steel dice

Where do you buy your dice? I thought you’d never ask.
I buy dice from several places. Here is an ordered list of my favorite places to shop for dice:

– My local game stores (this should be your favorite place to shop too!)
– Flying HorseDuck (Amazing dice)
– Dark Elf Dice
– Fennek and Finch
– URWizards
– Easy Roller Dice
– Misty Mountain
– Everything Dice
– Level Up Dice
– Norse Foundry
– Dispel Dice
– Forged Gaming
– Etsy. (CrystalMaggie mostly)
There are a few good dice sellers on Etsy and a lot of bad ones.
– Amazon dot com. I hate shopping here because it’s all drop-shipped from China and it pads a billionaire’s bank account but they have nice dice from time to time at low prices.

How big is your dice collection?
Over 100 full sets of dice (and counting), probably 50 single d20s and a few handfuls of other random dice that aren’t from matched sets.

I have a lot of dice but I’ve given several sets of dice away over the last couple years. A few sets went to relatives that play D&D, a few sets went to my kids, I gave a big jug of plastic dice to a local middle school D&D club, I sent several sets of metal dice to a D&D club at an under-funded high school across the country in response to someone on the bird app asking for donations. Lately I’ve been donating dice to the local tabletop gaming store in town for their giveaways. I’ve bought enough new dice since then to replace everything I’ve given away and more. My big dice box is still overflowing. My big dice box overflowed and now I use several smaller dice boxes that hold 18 sets of dice each so I can just buy more dice boxes when I run out of room.

What do you do with dice you don’t want? Can I have some dice from your collection? Yeah, probably. Try me.
