Name<\/strong>: Formless Dice Spectrum Canva

Description<\/strong>: This is a set of seven not-quite-sharp-edged metal dice which have enamel panels set into the dice for the faces. Each face is a dark gray\/blackish color with gold numbers inlaid into them. The enamel faces have some kind of prismatic material in tiny vertical strips embedded in them that reflects rainbow colors when light is shined on them. The closest match to the font used that I was able to find is called: Ascender Uni Duo. The font on the dice has a little bit more weight in the numbers and the ends of the ‘3’ are curved in a bit more. In a surprising twist, the 6 and 9 faces have NO MARKINGS WHATSOEVER to indicate orientation. Nothing. Nil. The d10’s have edged waists.

4d6 drop 1 stat block<\/strong>: 12, 7, 10, 7, 8, 9 (53 total!!) A Cowardly Goliath fighter from the Salt Flats who gets nervous speaking in front of crowds.

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

I think this is the worst set of stats I’ve ever rolled using the 4d6 drop 1 method. What a hinderance that would be until you got a few ASIs and magic items under your belt to get those stats above water.

A 1st level fighter (with the appropriate proficiencies) making each ability check once using 2024 rules.

Those are some awful ability check rolls. I’d estimate that maybe 3 of them would be successes. Yikes I’m rolling like garbage with this set of dice.

Final Thoughts:<\/strong> Yet another set of dice that I backed on Kickstarter… a year-ish ago that just showed up in the mail last week. They of course looked better in the promo photos with good lighting. The dice are made as metal cores with frames around each face so that separate enameled face pieces can be placed in the little empty spaces to become the faces of the die. It’s hard to explain without seeing the video that the Kickstarter campaign folks shared several months ago. It must have been quite a process to create dice that then have to have every single side glued to the bodies in the correct orientation.

Let’s get into it though, what’s good about these dice?
– Size: They’re a good bit larger than standard which I love. Big hands & bad eyes means bigger is better for me to a point. These are absolutely in the sweet spot size-wise for my tastes.
– Weight: They’re heavy and have a nice feel of inertia when rolled. I love hearing them clack into the sides of my wooden dice box even if they’re making small dents in the sides with each roll.
– Sound: This is an odd one but certain dice have a pleasant sound (to me anyway) that makes me smile a little bit when I hear them rolled. For hollow metal dice, some sets sound fantastic when you jingle them in your hand. This set sounds great when they <thonk> down in the wooden dice tray and bounce off of the wooden sides.
– The Rainbow reflectors: I really like the way that the reflective prism material reflects light in a rainbow stripe when the light hits the sides just right. I love rainbow dice in general and I love the way that these light up.

That’s not a huge list of “likes” unfortunately. Now lets get into the dislikes:

– No orientation indicators: I don’t know how you can make d10\/d12\/d20 dice without any marks showing you which way is up to differentiate between the 6 and 9 faces. For these dice, you have to look at the side opposite of what you rolled to determine if you rolled a 6 or a 9. I’ve never seen TTRPG dice that were missing this feature.
– It’s hard to see the rainbow effect. Without a light shining directly on the die, you don’t see the rainbow effect. The dice just look like they’re dark black or gray and unremarkable until you get some light on those faces.
– Case: The dice cases that the dice came in were a little bit cheap and gimicky They have 2 tiny LED lights built into the lid that turn on when you open the case. I see what they’re doing with this, I bought a frosted Dichroic glass chonk d20 (see: Review #088 “The Future’s So Bright<\/a>“) with the same kind of light in the lid. Unfortunately, the light in the lid that came with my glass d20 is almost dead so the light-up effect when you open the lid is nearly gone. The batteries for these lights aren’t replaceable without ripping open the lining of the lid. In a bigger dice case like the one that came with this set of dice, there are two lights and they aren’t bright enough until it gets very dark. I don’t know that I’ll even use these boxes once the batteries for these lights die out.

Other thoughts:
– Cost: at $70 a set, these dice weren’t a bargain. They’re nice and they’re heavy but usually buying from a Kickstarter campaign is a little more of a bargain for early backers. This campaign didn’t follow that pattern. They’re charging in-store prices for drop-shipped products. It’s what the market will bear ultimately.
– Rolls: These dice have so far rolled like complete trash. They’ve rolled awful in this review and at my last game session. I don’t know if I’ll be motivated to bring these with me to my in-person games much if I only roll them because I feel obligated to and will be dreading my rolls with them. I’m surprised that the statistical data earlier in the review (Mean\/Median\/Chi-Square) was so normal \/ average.

Overall: Pretty good execution on their vision, nice size, weight and reflective rainbows but they missed the mark just a little bit. Would I buy these if I saw them in my Local Game Store (LGS)? Yeah, I probably would.


**<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019ve added a new value to the reviews called \u201cChi-square<\/strong>\u201d which is a calculation of the difference between of the number of times each value was rolled in the d20 roll test compared to the number of times each value would be rolled in a perfectly equal roll test. (perfectly equal means every value comes up the same number of times, or\u00a0[total number of rolls \/ number of sides on the die]<\/strong>) Chi-square gives a sense of how far away from the statistical average the results of the d20 roll test were.
