Name<\/strong>: 2024 D&D Starter Set dice

Description<\/strong>: This is a set of 11 dull-edge acrylic dice that are a dark transluscent red color with white carved numbers that are inked white. The fonts (there are 3 in this set) are custom nothing-fonts that have elements from several other fonts. On the 4d6, 1d8, d10, d%, and 2d20 the one is a vertical bar as found in Gill Sans, the two has a gentle (not sharp) knee similar to Helvetica, the three has a flat top as Gotham does. On the lone d4, the one has a flag but no base, the two has a sharper knee, and the three has a rounded top (this looks like Arial). On the d12 die, the ones have both flags and bases. The two is a lengthened knee with a slight vertical, the three has a flat top again, The d10s have edged waists. The numbers are etched and painted flat white color. The 6 and 9 faces have underbars on the d12 and the d6 (why on the d6 though?) and dots on the rest of the dice to indicate their orientation.

4d6 drop 1 stat block<\/strong>: 13, 9, 13, 13, 12, 13 (73 total) An ambitious Aasimar Paladin from a camp of army followers who left their home in disgrace.

(This was the first D&D character suggestion that came up at https:\/\/whothefuckismydndcharacter.com which is fun because I’m currently playing an Aasimar Paladin at my in-person D&D game)

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

An Aasimar Paladin with a 16 strength and the Great Weapon fighting style inflicting a critical hit on something undead with divine smite and a sentient sword with a total “Bro” attitude that does 12 additional points of damage. Calculating damage at levels: 2, 5, 9, 13, & 17. I’ll be using the “max damage plus one roll of normal damage” for the critical hit<\/strong> calculations<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final Thoughts:<\/strong> This is the set of cheap acrylic dice that was included with the 2024 D&D starter box set. I was looking over my D&D shelf last week and I found these dice in an unopened plastic bag in the box. I guess I’d never used the box set and probably just bought it because I like to buy “all the things”. I’m running low on dice to review so I figured I’d review a set of dice that I didn’t think I would like. These dice didn’t disappoint in that category (but they did in most others). It’s nice that the box set includes a set of dice, so that new players don’t have to figure out where to buy dice after they buy the box set. I also understand that cutting costs is paramount in the end-stage capitalism world that we live in. Maximize corporate profit at all costs! What I don’t understand is how someone (in a factory in another country where cheap junk is made) managed to create such a bad set of basic acrylic dice.

What’s wrong with these dice then?
They look terrible. They’re a translucent red color but it’s a bland medium red and there is a slight variation in the shade of red that probably doesn’t bother most people.

They feel terrible. They are smooth with rounded edges and vertices. A few of the dice have sides that are slightly concave (due to shrinkage in the molding process) The sides have just a slippery cheap plastic feel. Worlds apart from even cheap resin dice.

They are jittery when you roll them. As the dice settle, they wobble and almost vibrate a little bit as they settle. This is another reason I really like sharp-edge dice in general. When they stop, they stop very quickly. Frankly, I’m surprised that the 100-roll test indicates that these d20s are balanced. This isn’t the worst aspect of these dice though, the worst is….

The font. Oh my gods the font is so bad. This is the part that I really don’t understand. There are a few different fonts present on the dice. I found 3 different ones (the digit 1) on the dice. The first was just a vertical line, the second was a vertical line with a flag\/serif on top but without a base, the third variation has the serif on top and a base for the one. I also found that the set of dice were pretty evenly split between which version of the three (the digit 3) that they used. Some have a three with with a rounded top half and the rest have a three with a flat top. There was also variation in the use of marks to indicate the orientation of the 6 and 9 digits. The dice set includes: a short underbar, a longer underbar, a small dot, and a larger dot. ALL WITHIN THE SAME SET OF DICE!!

I hate this aspect of the dice most of all. The font will never not bother me with these dice. I don’t understand how there is such inconsistency in the dice of this set. Did the manufacturer have several variations of clear red acrylic dice and just grab a few from each bin to throw together as a complete set? Do the dice molds for this specific set of dice actually have different fonts and external marks? Someone making these dice molds just doesn’t care at all about what they’re creating for some American company to include in their product. Hasbro (Wizards of the Coast) either don’t care enough to fix it or didn’t notice that the font isn’t cohesive throughout all of the dice. I know that I’ll never get a nice set of dice in a starter set but even a set of sub-Chessex dice sold for $4 at any game store or those ultra-cheap offers on the “support-the-billionaire-who-killed-all-of-the-physical-book-stores-rainforest” website that have 15 full sets of cheap resin dice in swirly colors for $10 is better than these.

This set of dice won’t see any time at my in-person game. If I had the equivalent of a wood chipper for dice, I’d send these through it. Ick. The only thing that they have going for them…. No, I’ll rephrase…. The only thing that could have made them worse was if they had a logo on the 20 face.

Verdict: Garbage. Avoid.

**<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019ve added a new value to the reviews called \u201cPearson’s Chi-square Test<\/strong>\u201d which is a calculation of the difference between of the number of times each value was rolled in the d20 roll test compared to the number of times each value would be rolled in a perfectly equal roll test. (perfectly equal means every value comes up the same number of times, or\u00a0[total number of rolls \/ number of sides on the die]<\/strong>) Chi-square gives a sense of how far away from the statistical average the results of the d20 roll test were. It\u2019s not a perfect measure of a die\u2019s balance and fairness but it\u2019s a good step in that direction.
