They have a slight “shattered glass” effect inside of the dice but it’s very hard to tell without a bright light. Even with a bright light, they look like they have holofoil inclusions in them. The numbers are painted on the faces in white. The dice use a font that is futuristic and science fiction-y. It’s most likely a proprietary font that’s not commercially available. I believe it’s a thick italicized version of a font called: Conthrax. The d10s have edged waists and small dots are used to indicate orientation of the 6 and 9 faces. The dice came in a small cardboard box with a foam insert and a folding magnetic lid with nice starfinder themed art on the outside.

Size:
d20: They’re a lovely shade of blue but I’m not interested in the Starfinder (or Pathfinder) game systems and I don’t love the lines on the faces or the captive face effect on the d20 which makes the numbers smaller than they should be. Why did I get these dice to review then? They were sent to me for free with the stipulation that I rate them an 8 or better on my site as compensation which would drive a lot of my dedicated readers to buy them. It’s a deal that my brand management team came up with and negotiated on my behalf.

Totally kidding about all that. My Local Game Store is going through a rough time right now and will have to shut down for an undetermined period of time. They needed support from their customers so I went and bought the two new Faerun D&D (2024 rules) books, these dice, and a few other things to help them out with some purchases that I didn’t need to make but I am happy with anyway. These dice are the shattered glass style, which isn’t really my style, I don’t care so much for the look of the shattered glass. Thankfully you can only see the shattered bits inside the dice under bright light. In any other light they’re just dark blue glass dice. I don’t love or hate the font. It’s appropriate for a Sci-fi themed set of dice. I even think using an italicized font is a good move for these as well. It’d be nice if the numbers were a little bit larger on the faces of most of the dice and maybe if they went with another color for the lines on the border of some of the faces.

These are a good middle-ground weight between resin and most stone dice so they bounce a little bit and slide to a stop at the end of most rolls. I prefer lighter resin dice or heavier metal dice, both of which stop faster. The edges on these dice are not quite sharp, which is about what you can expect from glass or stone dice. Sharp edge glass dice would be quite dangerous and require you to wear protective gloves and roll them into very durable dice trays that can withstand razor sharp glass edges. This is of course just me going off on a silly tangent joking. These dice are nice looking, well made, well finished, and I’m sure they’re someone’s absolute cup of tea but they’re not quite mine. I almost always think I’m going to like stone / glass dice more than I do with the glaring exception of the frosted Dichroic glass dice that I covered in reviews #040 and #088. Those dice are just unbelievably gorgeous. Maybe skip this set and get some of the frosted Dichroic glass dice instead. Try to buy them through your local game store though, they could really use your business.

** I’ve added a new value to the reviews called “Chi-square” which is a calculation of the difference between of the number of times each value was rolled in the d20 roll test compared to the number of times each value would be rolled in a perfectly equal roll test. (perfectly equal means every value comes up the same number of times, or [total number of rolls / number of sides on the die]) Chi-square gives a sense of how far away from the statistical average the results of the d20 roll test were. It’s not a perfect measure of a die’s balance and fairness but it’s a good step in that direction. More information about die fairness / balance roll testing can be found here: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/70802/how-can-i-test-whether-a-die-is-fair

I only bought these to help support my LGS in their time of need.
