114: Dreaming Of Me

It’s hard not to love a big chunk of Mint and Lavender colored rubber

Name: Mint Lavender Chonk 55mm Rubber Silicon bouncy giant d20

Description: This is a large (55mm) chonk d20 made of silicon rubber from Viridian Dice. It has semi-sharp edges and vertices that are about as sharp as you could manage for a silicon die. The die is a pastel mint green with recessed numbers inked in dark lavender. The font is very difficult to identify. So far Texturina and Cloister Black are the closest I can find to a match. The 6 and 9 faces use underbars to indicate their orientation.

Mean: 10.7

A great variety of results with the 4 being the outlier

6d20 drop 1s and 2s stat block: 9, 7, 5, 15, 20, 20 (76 total) A Sassy Half-Elf Cleric from the City of Ten Thousand Flags who is red-green colorblind

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

A 20th level Cleric with maxed WIS, and the Skill Expert feat (medicine) making 10 medicine checks to stabilize the 10 glass cannon wizards in her party who all went down:

Medicine Check #1 10 + 17 = 27: Success!
Medicine Check #2 11 + 17 = 28: Success!
Medicine Check #3 3 + 17 = 20: Success!
Medicine Check #4 7 + 17 = 24: Success!
Medicine Check #5 11 + 17 = 28: Success!
Medicine Check #6 9 + 17 = 26: Success!
Medicine Check #7 8 + 17 = 25: Success!
Medicine Check #8 13 + 17 = 30: Success!
Medicine Check #9 4 + 17 = 21: Success!
Medicine Check #10 3 + 17 = 20: Success!

The good thing about high level Clerics is that even without the Skill Expert feat they can’t fail a DC10 medicine check with a 20 wisdom and proficiency in the medicine skill

Random Tables rolls (6d20):

Wild Magic Table: – 66 You gain resistance to all damage for the next minute.

Mushrooming Random Spore Effects: – 63 The target makes a DC 16 wisdom save. On a success, they are under the effects of the Dragon Breath spell for 1d4 rounds. On a fail, they’re frightened of every creature they can see.

Final Thoughts: I’ve been looking at Silicon dice for a while with a passing interest. There is a set or two of silicon dice that I have sitting in browser tabs for possible future purchase but I just haven’t been able to convince myself that I like them enough to buy them. I have a big pile of dice waiting to be reviewed so it’ll be a while before I buy more dice. This chonk d20 looked really good on Viridian’s website and luckily it’s just as pretty in person so at $16.50 for a 55mm chonk d20 it was easy to convince myself to try this one. The color is lovely and the dark lavender numbers contrast very well with the mint body of the die. The edges are very clean and as sharp as they could realistically be without being at risk of tearing. The numbers are well molded and inked. I don’t see any sloppy work on this die with the inking or with mold lines.

I’m okay with the amount of bouncing that this die does when rolled. It’s hard to keep it from dropping off of the large pad of paper that I use to roll it here at the review desk. A dice tray with reasonable sides would take care of that. I think in-game I’d just roll it on the table though. Overall i’m very happy with my purchase.

I make a habit of bringing a jumbo d20 with me to my in-person game. I like to have it ready for any big rolls that happen during the session. Things like revivifying fallen party members (Cleric main 4 lyfe!) or death saving throws. I might go a few sessions between using the big d20 that I bring with me but I like to have it there in reserve just in case I get the chance to pull it out and bring some extra gravity to the situation. I recommend this to anyone else out there. Bring a big d20 for big rolls.

** I’ve added a new value to the reviews called “Chi-square” which is a calculation of the difference between of the number of times each value was rolled in the d20 roll test compared to the number of times each value would be rolled in a perfectly equal roll test. (perfectly equal means every value comes up the same number of times, or [total number of rolls / number of sides on the die]) Chi-square gives a sense of how far away from the statistical average the results of the d20 roll test were. It’s not a perfect measure of a die’s balance and fairness but it’s a good step in that direction. More information about die fairness / balance roll testing can be found here: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/70802/how-can-i-test-whether-a-die-is-fair
