Opinions about my math rocks

089:Diesel Power

They don’t have every color of the rainbow but all the ones you need

I love the different color ink used for each die

Name: Bifrost Metal 7 Dice Set

Description: This is a standard size set of sharp edge metal dice. They are Oil Slick / Flame Torched color / design. The faces of the dice are smoothly polished and the numbers are each inked in different colors with the same color ink used for the numbers on all sides of each die. They use yellow, orange, brighter orange, green, purple, and blue inks for the numbers. The font is again a very basic/plain style font that I couldn’t identify. It is somewhat similar to Bw Modelica but with no flag on the 1, a straighter back on the 5 and more curl on the terminals of the 6 and 9. No serifs of any kind were used in the production of this font. The 6 and 9 faces use dots to indicate their orientation. The d10 and d% have not-quite sharp edged waists. The set came in a plastic case similar to many Chessex dice sets. They’re simple metal dice.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 18.9 mm (Point->Point) 23.54 mm

Where did they come from: Gamagora games in Oregon.

How much did they cost: $32

Material / color: Metal (Zinc) pink/yellow/green/blue flame torched

Quality: Pretty good overall.

Readability: Decent all around. The Yellow and light orange numbered dice (d10 & d12) are much easier to read than the darker purple / blue inked dice (d4, d6, d8).

Value: Good value.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Fifty d20 rolls: 15, 17, 5, 15, 3, 19, 9, 5, 8, 8, 7, 15, 6, 2, 10, 11, 20, 16, 10, 5, 4, 7, 5, 15, 6, 9, 9, 11, 6, 11, 17, 16, 20, 4, 5, 8, 15, 17, 10, 8, 19, 6, 12, 18, 1, 14, 16, 11, 15, 12

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

17th level Oath of Vengeance Paladin attacking a Dracolich with a Holy Avenger Great sword that is a flame-tongue, using a 4th level Divine Smite on attacks that hit, and also has the holy weapon spell active. The Paladin has maxed STR and CHA, and the Great Weapon Master feat. (Using 5e rules).

Holy Weapon spell: You imbue a weapon you touch with holy power. Until the spell ends, the weapon emits bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. In addition, weapon attacks made with it deal an extra 2d8 radiant damage on a hit. If the weapon isn’t already a magic weapon, it becomes one for the duration. As a bonus action on your turn, you can dismiss this spell and cause the weapon to emit a burst of radiance. Each creature of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of the weapon must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 4d8 radiant damage, and it is blinded for 1 minute. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isn’t blinded. At the end of each of its turns, a blinded creature can make a Constitution saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success.

First attack: 16 + 3 + 11 – 5 = 25 HITS! 8 + 3 + 5 + 9 + 10 + 8 + 10 + 8 + 34 = 95 damage
Second attack 14 + 3 + 11 – 5 = 23 HITS! 7 + 3 + 5 + 13 + 6 + 9 + 10 + 5 + 24 =82 damage
Bonus Action: dismiss the Holy Weapon spell.
Dracolich CON save: 14 Fails, it takes another 24 damage
Total: 201 damage

The Dracolich still has 24 HP and is really wishing he hadn’t offended this hot-headed Halfling Paladin

(This is an excuse for rolling a bunch of dice and coming up with an overly-complicated scenario to calculate damage, modifiers, and bonuses)

Random Tables rolls:

Devilish Deals: For a price: 53 – The Map of Infinity – Make a deal with the devil to gain an enchanted map that will reveal hidden pathways and portals in unknown places.

Assassins, Thieves, and Criminals: 33 – Patricia Kang A skilled monk who also knows some combat magics. She usually pretends to be a guest at parties and waits until somebody starts drunk-fighting, and immediately stops the aggressor. Then, she uses the confusion in the place to start hitting everyone, knocking dozens of people out in a blink, only to take all their stuff.

Final Thoughts: What a gorgeous set of dice. I have a few other dice in my collection that have an oil-slick / flame-torched color to them but none are this bright and vibrant. These colors just jump out so much that it makes me smile. I’m a person who likes a lot of color to things, no dark broody dice sets for me. Give me some contrast and saturation please. I love the stripes on the d4 faces that remind me of the pictures taken from heat cameras showing jet engine afterburner tests.

Not only do they have all of these hues going for them but the numbers are inked in a different color on each die. I think I only have one other set that’s inked this way, (post 009: Color In Your Life) and that’s one of the things I really like about that set as well. I think that the yellow and orange ink looks the best, so they could have all been inked with those and I would have been totally fine with it. I do wish that the dice were a little bit bigger (of course) or at least that the d20 was a little bit larger so that it could have slightly larger numbers on the faces in the name of readability.

The dice are all quite sharp except the d12 strangely. I’m not sure why that one got a little bit rounded edges. Not a deal breaker at all, just a curiosity really. How often do I roll a d12 when I’m not playing a Barbarian (which I’m currently not playing).

I found these in a small board game store in Oregon as I was passing through town and was surprised at the large dice selection that they had, and how low these were priced. I think they would have been reasonably priced at $45 in a game store. The shop is charging <online retailer> prices for a set of nice dice. The finish on the faces is very smooth which makes the d20 slide a little bit and makes the d6 barely roll. It lands on the table and just slides to a stop. I greatly prefer this over a d6 with rounded edges that wanders around a while before settling down.

Overall, the bright colors, the weight, and the sound of the dice when I shake them together in my hands make me very happy. If the set were ~10% larger they’d be a 10/10 easily. If you ever find a set of these dice, buy them, you won’t be sorry. I feel like there are several sets of dice that I own that if someone saw them and said that they loved them, that I’d just give them away to the person immediately. This set is not in that category. I’m hanging on to these.
