087: Everybody In The Place

When you find a good D&D group, cling to it with your entire being!

Names: Five Chonk d20s that I’m gifting to my D&D party:
Arita (Sakura) Metal Chonk d20
Beheld Floating Multi-Eye Inclusion Chonk d20
And In The Darkness Bind Them | Ring Inclusion with Watching Eye Chonk d20
Kerwellsi Wilderness Chonk d20
F-Words Sharp Edge Resin Fuck You / Fuck Me Chonk d20

Description: I bought five chonk d20s to give to my D&D group. Four of them are sharp-edge resin and one of them is sharp-ish edge metal. Descriptions of them:
Arita d20: The only metal d20 of the five. This is a heavy chonk d20 made of a silvery metal with cherry blossoms / branches wrapping around the die. The flowers are a deep sparkly blue and the branches are deep sparkly red. The numbers are black. The font is a slightly italicised TNR-ish typeface with serifs and just that ever-so-slight lean to the right. There are small dots used to indicate the orientation of the 6 and 9 faces. The die was delivered in a cheap leather pouch that I will swap for a nice gift box.

Beheld d20: This is a sharp-edge resin chonk d20. It is made with clear resin and has a liquid center which contains a few small eyeballs with very colorful irises & pupils. The eyeballs are in their own liquid capsules so they alway look upward no matter which face the die is resting on. The font is very simple, similar to PT Sans. The numbers are inked in gold

Dark Ring d20: This is also a sharp-edge chonk d20. It’s made with clear and deep red resin. It has a replica of the “one ring to rule them all” from the LoTR franchise with the Elven script around the outside. The ring is colored to look flame-torched / oil slick colors. There is also an eyeball in liquid in the center so that the colorful pupil faces up regardless of how the die is sitting. The font is very similar to Futura with a couple of very subtle differences. The numbers are inked in silver.

Kerwellsi d20: This is a sharp-edge chonk d20. It’s mostly made of clear resin. The 20 face (bottom of the die) is a big glob of white resin. Inside the die are green structures that look like plant life of some kind. Not flowers, but some kind of self-standing greenery. The clear resin offers a good view of it. The font is an odd one. It’s a little bit scripty, a little bit like Omnia and it has some elements of Alpengeist as well. (not the stroke on the ‘7’ though). The numbers are inked in a bronze color

F-Words d20: This is a sharp-edge chonk d20 as well. It’s made with blue and red resin that’s a little bit transparent. It has green/blue holofoil on the inside that gives is a gorgeous glowing look. Instead of the number ’20’ on the 20 face, it reads: “Fuck you”, and instead of the number ‘1’ on the 1 face it reads: “Fuck me”. The closest font to it that I can find is Cassia. The serifs and ball-ends of some of the digits are much more exaggerated than Cassia’s however. The numbers are inked in a bronzy gold.

Final Thoughts for each die:
Arita d20
: I really like the color combinations and the heft of this die. I hope the recipient feels the same. The PC they play is a samurai, so the look and feel of the die should match the feel of the PC. I really hope it does anyway.

Beheld d20: I love the little eyeballs inside of this die. I found out that it comes in a larger version with even more little eyes inside. I might need one of these for myself. This is for the DM/GM who I don’t believe is a dice goblin and I’ve never seen them use a chonk d20. Fingers crossed.

Dark Ring d20: I love the aesthetic of this die and I think it fits the mindset of the PC that I bought it for. Their character would totally love to get a dark ring of power.

Kerwellsi d20: This one is so clean and nice. This is going to the PC/player that is newest to the party. My PC has barely interacted with their PC and I mostly just know their species/class (druid) so I went with something that I though looked really cool and felt druidy to me. I really hope they like it.

F-words Red d20: I think the “Fuck you” / “Fuck me” for the 20 / 1 faces fits the personality of the player that this die is going to. I’ve interacted the most with their PC in-game and I think the die itself is gorgeous with the holofoil glow. I have a full set of non-chonk dice very similar to this one that I love (which I’ve somehow never reviewed here!) I hope that the words for the 20 and 1 faces will be appreciated by the player.

Overall thoughts and “the why”: I’ve been playing D&D in this party for a little over a year now and the group has been very stable. We’ve lost two players after very short stints in the group and gained one but the other four of us and the DM have been very solid. We don’t often miss sessions and the DM very generously hosts us in his basement / game room. Both the GM and one of the other players have given everyone at the table gifts previously which got me thinking… What would I give everyone as a show of appreciation for them giving up several hours of their time late at night on a regular schedule? Oh wait! I’m a Dice Goblin… Dice of course!

After that shocking realization, I just had to search all of the dice sellers that I like to find something that I thought fit each of their characters and I figured that chonk d20s would be a good fit for everyone. I’m the only player at the table that regularly brings chonks with me. I don’t know if the rest of them even own chonk d20s. Sadly they’re not all dice goblins like I am. I just love the feeling of owning and rolling a chonk d20. They’re just so much more fun than standard size d20s to me. They add gravity to the result to go from: “what will I roll on my d20” to: “What will this big magic math orb tell me about the success or failure of what I’m trying to do?”. It’s hard to explain but Chonk d20s are just better in almost every way. They’re much easier to read for some of us too.

Bottom line: I found a great group of people to spend evenings with pretending to be someone else in a fantasy world. The GM-ing, the scenarios, and the role-play are all super fun. I hope these simple gifts help the others at the table understand how much I enjoy their company, efforts, attention, and their personal sacrifice to continue making the game happen.

Epilogue: I gave the dice to the players at my last session and made giving them out part of the in-game RP. I think they all really liked them. I got a great laugh and smiles out of the fuck you / fuck me d20, so I think I nailed that. I hope the dice all roll well for their recipients (even the DM. No sandbagging… if the monsters kill us then we die)
