072: Hammer To Fall

So you like playing table top games where you fight monsters with weapons eh?

Name: Warhammer Pink Dice Set

Description: This is a slightly larger than standard-size set of sharp edge metal dice. The dice are made of (probably) Zinc and have a pink enamel coating on the faces with raised numbers and a small weapon on each face. All of the edges are slightly raised and pained black. The faces all have martial weapons on them (Hammers, and axes). The numbers use an un-serifed font that is a combination of maybe Japanese calligraphy brush strokes and Norse/Dwarven angled numbers with relatively normal ‘3’s. A bit of an abomination but not terrible. The 6 and 9 faces use tiny dots to indicate their orientation, and some numbers have weapons under their them to indicate orientation. The d10 and d% have edged waists. I’ve never seen this set of dice anywhere online or in stores so I don’t know if they come in other colors or who sells them.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 22.6 mm (Point->Point) 28.0 mm

Where did they come from: Lost Star Tabletop Outfitters

How much did they cost: $ $45? No idea.

Material / color: Metal (Zinc) with black edges and pink enamel faces

Quality: Pretty good. The detail on the weapons is a little tight. No dings or obvious flaws.

Readability: So-so. Sometime readable from the floor 4 feet away.

Value: Good value at or below $45 I’d say.

Overall Rating: 7/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 9 rolls

Fifty d20 rolls: 6, 7, 6, 7, 18, 3, 4, 10, 6, 6, 11, 12, 15, 9, 1, 3, 9, 20, 11, 7, 12, 17, 14, 6, 5, 14, 1, 6, 1, 19, 16, 17, 15, 16, 1, 4, 9, 6, 1, 14, 16, 8, 16, 16, 7, 12, 1, 5, 15, 7

Mean: 9.36
Median: 8.5
Mode: 6

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 14, 11, 6, 13, 12, 9 (65 total) An Intolerant Elf Fighter from a frozen wasteland who was petrified for over two hundred years

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

20th level Champion fighter facing an Adult Blue Dragon. Every attack is using the Great Weapon Master and Great Weapon Fighting feats with a +1 Flame Tongue Greatsword. (Assuming that our hero raised their strength to 20 with 3 of their 6 ASIs and spent the rest on feats)

Attack rolls (Champions score critical hits on 18-20):
15+11+1 -5 = 22 (HIT) 2d6 + 1 + 5 + 2d6 = 25 + 10 = 35 damage!
20+11+1 -5 = 27 (CRIT!) 2d6 + 1 + 5 + 2d6 = 22 x 2 + 10 = 54 damage!
18+11+1 – 5 = 25 (CRIT!) 2d6 + 1 + 5 + 2d6 = 23 x 2 + 10 = 56 damage!
4+11+1 – 5 = 11 (MISS) 0 damage
Action Surge!
6+11+1 – 5 =13 (MISS) 0 damage
19+11+1 – 5 = 26 (CRIT!) 2d6 + 1 + 5 + 2d6 = 21 x 2 + 10 = 52 damage!
20+11+1 -5 = 27 (CRIT!) 2d6 + 1 + 5 + 2d6 = 23 x 2 + 10 = 56 damage!
6+11+1 – 5 = 13 (MISS) 0 damage
Bonus action (for scoring a crit with GWM):
14+11+1 – 5 = 26 (HIT) 2d6 + 1 + 5 + 2d6 = 30 + 10 = 40 damage!

Total damage done: 294 points of slashing and fire damage and the Adult Blue Dragon with 225 HP dies in the first round. (If the Fighter somehow managed to make a DC 17 WIS save to avoid being frightened that is)

(This is another excuse for rolling dice)

Random Tables rolls:

Factions: 15 – The Oak Defenders – Mostly comprised of farmers, fighters, and freed slaves they will fight to protect their lands. They have quite the armory from all the foes they’ve defeated over generations. The local nobles are getting scared of their growing political aspirations.

Demon Lords: 92 – Valpula, The Gear Demon: Valpula is obsessed with gears and clockwork. His ultimate goal is to find a way to become Primus, the God of the Outer Plane Mecanus.

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way

Final Thoughts:

These dice were not an impulse buy (for once) when I was in Lost Star. I think I looked at them and then somehow had enough restraint not to buy them right away. I came back a few days later and picked them up though. Gotta support small game stores amiright? Now that I have them, I almost never use them. I don’t dislike them for any specific reason. Maybe the color isn’t amazing or I have another set of pink dice that I like better, or the weapons on each face require that the numbers to be smaller which then makes them harder to read.

The color of these dice isn’t quite as vibrant as my camera is making them look. In person they’re more of a dull Fuchsia color. I wish they were closer to the enhanced color that came out of the camera though. Even so they’d still be my second favorite pink metal dice.

I don’t love the font but it’s better than the Norse / Dwarven fonts that I complain about every time a set of dice comes through the review office with. I find those Dwarven/Norse fonts a barrier that a set of dice has to overcome for me to buy them. It’s a considerable minus.

These dice are a very good weight and size, just at the bottom of the perfect range of sizes for sub-chonk dice. They roll well on the table and the number spread on the d20 isn’t great but not terrible either.

I’ll try these dice out at my in-person game tomorrow night and see if my opinion of them improves, or if someone else compliments them, I’ll try to give them to that person as a gift. I hope one of those two things happens.
