Opinions about my math rocks

071: Rainbow In The Dark

On paper these dice sound awful but they’re very nice up close in person

The photo just doesn’t capture the vibrant colors enough

Name: Flame Torched / Oil Slick Rough Metal Dice ???

Description: This is a slightly larger than standard-size set of almost-sharp edge metal dice. They have a very rough pitted rock-like finish on all sides. They have a very brilliant oil-slick / flame-torched rainbow colored finish. They have pink, green, blue, and yellow colors primarily. The color shifts depending on the angle you view them. The roughly finished sides really catch the light and make these dice shine. The numbers use a thick slightly gothic font which looks very sloppy due to the rough surface of every face. The 6 and 9 faces use dots to indicate their orientation and the d10 and d% have edged waists. I know that these dice are also available in an indigo blue color because I have a set in that color.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 22.1 mm (Point->Point) 27.4 mm

Where did they come from: Lost Star Tabletop Gaming

How much did they cost: $45? $50? No idea how much I paid. I didn’t save the receipt.

Material / color: Metal (Zinc) flame torched rainbow

Quality: Very good. Solid heavy construction

Readability: Good-ish. The font is nice and large and contrasts but the faces shine and obscure the numbers a little bit from more than 4 feet away.

Value: Good value

Overall Rating: 8/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 40 rolls

Fifty d20 rolls: 19, 12, 7, 11, 12, 7, 9, 3, 6, 18, 20, 4, 3, 14, 4, 12, 7, 20, 9, 19, 11, 19, 18, 2, 6, 8, 11, 18, 11, 20, 16, 12, 13, 15, 12, 2, 1, 9, 4, 14, 19, 16, 1, 15, 11, 3, 6, 13, 3, 3 ( avg)

Casting Harm

You unleash a virulent disease on a creature that you can see within range. The target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 14d6 necrotic damage, or half as much damage on a successful save. The damage can’t reduce the target’s hit points below 1. If the target fails the saving throw, its hit point maximum is reduced for 1 hour by an amount equal to the necrotic damage it took. Any effect that removes a disease allows a creature’s hit point maximum to return to normal before that time passes.

On a failed save the target takes: 54 necrotic damage or 27 necrotic damage on a successful save.

(This is another excuse for rolling dice)

Random Tables rolls:

Unique Coins To Find In A Treasure Chest: 53 – A beautiful silver coin inlaid with rubies and amethyst. You can purchase anything you want with it however and it returns to your pocket after 1d4 hours but once returned, the person you sold it to dies and a new gemstone appears on it.

Resurrection Side Effects: 39 – Another soul grabbed onto you on your way into the material plane, getting resurrected as well (A NPC appears, with DM determined details)

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way

Final Thoughts:
These were an impulse purchase. I was in a tabletop gaming store with my youngest and she saw them and wanted them immediately because she loves colorful things / rainbows. I saw them and another pair just like them in a deep Indigo color and bought these for her and the Indigo set for me. I’m very happy to support a small gaming store.

I can’t find these online anywhere. I don’t know where the store sourced them from or what other colors they are available in. I’d love to see what other colors I could get them in. Orange? any shade of red? Dark green? The list goes on.

They’re quite heavy and feel rough in your hand like a piece of lava rock you might find on a beach or something. They’re not jagged / sharp but there are no smooth sides / edges on any of these dice. The main thing that these dice have are the brilliant colors. The colors shift a little bit depending on how the light hits them and your viewing angle. You look at them and they’re red, then you look away and when you look back, they’re kind of yellow now. The pink/yellow/blue/green colors are gorgeous. They’re definitely a great example of the “oil slick” / “flame torched” look.

I can’t find fault with these dice other than that some of the numbers on the d8 are sideways. This isn’t going to affect my rolls but it’s just an oddity in the way that they were numbered. The other dice all seem to be numbered normally. This isn’t something that I’ve run into before.

While there’s nothing that I can fault these dice on, they don’t have that extra pop or feature that would make them a 10/10 rating. I love the way that they look but they don’t get the “ooh. I need to look at those dice!” reaction that I’d say all of my 10/10 rated sets do.

I still recommend that if you ever see a set of these in a game store, definitely pick them up…. or comment here and tell me so that I can get them. They’re brilliant.
