055: Trial By Fire

I wanted some fire-themed dice but sadly this is the best I could do

The black resin for smoke/soot just makes them look dirty

Name: Fireball 4D6 Dice Set

Description: This is a standard-size set of resin d6 dice with no sharp edges. They are made with clear resin and have little bits of fire inclusions inside along with a little bit of black coloring inside to look like smoke / soot. The dice have little flame designs carved into one corner of each face of the dice. The font used is in the TNR neighborhood with little knuckles in the middle of the 1 and 4. The font is inked in red which makes the numbers very difficult to read in any light. There are no underbars/dots on the 6 faces, which is normal for a d6. These dice don’t come in any other styles / color ways as they’re specifically “fireball” themed dice.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 16 mm (Point->Point) 26 mm

Where did they come from: dnddice.com

How much did they cost: $36 for 12d6 ($12 for a set of 4d6)

Material / color: Clear resin with red fire inclusions.

Quality: Mediocre

Readability: Terrible even in good lighting conditions. Near impossible in less-than-good light. Forget about reading them from 4′ away.

Value: Fair value. They’re very specialized themed dice and I didn’t see any better options with a fire / fireball theme.

Overall Rating: 5/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20 and 18 on 3 dice: 3!! It only took three tries!

Ten Fifty d6 rolls: 1, 4, 2, 5, 4, 3, 5, 6, 3, 1, 5, 4, 2, 6, 4, 1, 4, 1, 3, 4, 3, 2, 1, 4, 3, 4, 6, 2, 1, 3, 4, 2, 6, 4, 1, 5, 6, 3, 5, 3, 4, 5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 3, 4, 5, 3 (3.5 avg)

Statistics:

Median: 4

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 16, 10, 10, 11, 12, 13 (72 total) A Crabby Tiefling fighter from a laid back beach town who has been exiled twice under different names

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

Casting Fireball at 9th level: A bright streak flashes from your pointing finger to a point you choose within range and then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of flame. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw. A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The fire spreads around corners. It ignites flammable objects in the area that aren’t being worn or carried.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 3rd.

Damage: (14d6) 58 fire damage on a failed save and 29 fire damage on a successful save

(This is another excuse for rolling dice)

Random Tables rolls (16d6):

100 City Encounters for Lvl 1-5 characters: 67 – 3 Small Pseudodragons, looking for food and playmates. They can be convinced to follow the party if they are offered treats or a shiny trinket.

NPC Physical Traits: 55 – The NPC has one leg severely deformed; they carry themselves around on double crutches.

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way

Final Thoughts: I play a cleric in my current campaign and upon reaching 5th level I was able to pick up the fireball spell. I don’t have many spells that do damage as I’m mostly a buff/healer cleric by choice (not necessarily by subclass). I like having the option of choosing: “let’s solve this problem with a fireball!”. It’s just a fun spell to cast, especially when you can hit grouped opponents together. I thought it’d be fun to have a specific set of dice just for casting fireball. I’m all about buying a special thing for a very specific purpose in D&D. I just wish I had more space at the table to bring things like my dice tower. (which I should review…)
As for these dice, I like them but I don’t love them. They’re quite bouncy when I roll them. I guess I’d expect this from what are really cheap resin dice. I wanted to find a d6 set that was fire themed and this is all I could find. I think that dnddice.com could have done a much better job making these dice (sharp edges, better coloring, different font color, resin with a little more clarity). I’d pay 50% more for these if they were fancier and easier to read. I wrote exactly those sentiments in the survey that dnddice.com sent me. I have no hate for you dnddice.com, I just want you to sell me a better product at a higher price. It’s things like this that make me want to either start making my own dice (bad idea) or make friends with someone who is already a dice maker (much better idea).
