033: Glass Danse

So you like glass dice but can’t decide on just one color to buy?

Name: Hand Carved Gemstone Dichroic Glass Dice Set

Description: A set of near-sharp edge dice made of clear Dichroic glass. They appear clear but because of the prism effect, they cast shadows in all of the colors of the rainbow. They have a yellowish tint due to the gold ink of the numbers and some of the colors are visible through the clear glass. The light really brings these dice alive with colors. This set uses a fairly tame Gothic font mixing angled curves with thin necks and waists for some digits (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9). The numbers are of course inked in gold. There are dots used to indicate orientation on the 6 and 9 faces which feel a little out of place with such an angular font. The d10s have edged waists and all edges and vertices are not dull but not sharp either. You could probably get away with stepping on these with bare feet in the middle of the night on a wood floor.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 20.4 mm (Point->Point) 25.47 mm

Where did they come from: Etsy (seller: RunicDice)

How much did they cost: $78

Material / color: Clear Dichroic glass

Quality: Excellent

Readability: decent, not great. Because of the glare both from the surface of the die and the reflection of color from inside of the die, the numbers are difficult to see on these dice. They didn’t get far in the floor test.

Value: A great value for Dichroic Glass dice

Overall Rating: 10/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 20 rolls

Ten d20 rolls: 5, 12, 20, 10, 19, 6, 17, 15, 4, 13 (12.1 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 14, 12, 9, 13, 18, 9 (75 total) A Pretty chill Tiefling Druid from a bustling city market who is getting too old for all of this.

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

Random Tables rolls:

Books: 28 – Why the Banshee Wails A classic bodice ripper about a young heroine torn between several suitors. She finally chooses one…the wrong one…who turns out to be a necromancer. She is turned into the titular banshee. A rather well written and surprisingly gripping tale.

Angels: 39 -Kel – Angel of Bindings. She’s a legendary healer, but she’s also renowned for trapping some of Hell’s finest warriors. She is the only known smith of angelic soulstones. Her voice has a hypnotic and soothing quality to it.

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way

Final Thoughts: Made of multiple pieces of glass with metal oxide layers between to give them color, these dice really shine and glow in the magenta/blue/yellow/green hues. A little bit of light makes them absolutely pop with color. I love the way they look while they’re rolling and at rest. It’s great to look at a set of dice just sitting on the table that are throwing off all different colors. The dice are of good quality with edges / vertices that aren’t quite as sharp as I normally like but maybe that’s a good idea when dice are made of glass or gemstones that could easy chip or actually cut your fingers when you handle them. I’d really like it if the entire set was about 15% – 20% bigger on a die-by-die basis. That’d make the d20 about 25mm. Finding a nice Dichroic glass chonk d20 in the 30mm-35mm neighborhood is on my white whale list of dice to buy. The font on this set is predictably gold (frown) and is of a ‘ye olde’ style which I’m not a big fan of. It’s tough to get past the gorgeous colors that come off of these dice and give them any bad marks at all. Shining a flashlight through these dice makes them even more vibrant and beautiful.

I bought these as a gift for my wife but she hasn’t played any TTRPGs in a few years so I’m going to hold on to them “for safe keeping” (wink wink) and have them ready for her if she ever needs them back. Maybe they’ll get used in the occasional tabletop game here and there. Who could fault me for that though? You can’t just leave a set of gorgeous dice sitting in a box at home to never see the light of day. Pretty dice need to be rolled… at a table… with other people who appreciate you rolling nice dice.

If I were to be in the market for a set of glass dice it’d be a tough choice between a set of these and a set of frosted Dichroic dice that glow instead of shining. A guy at my weekly game had a set of them last session and they gave me the “I need a set of these immediately!” feeling. Maybe I’ll have to start shopping for a set of the frosted glass dice. The trouble I go through for this silly little blog….
