Opinions about my math rocks

032: Purple Haze

Let’s make an amazing set of dice in the best shade of purple possible

Look at that rainbow prism glare in the shadows

Name: Purple Glitter Galaxy

Description: A set of sharp edge resin dice in purple resin with a bit of black resin added to each die in one of the corners. There are very colorful green/gold holofoil inclusions in each die. The light really makes the holofoil shine. The numbers are carved and inked in gold. The set uses the standard “Crystalmaggie” font that they seem to put on all of their dice. The typeface are a little whimsical with their nearly closed ‘4’ and ‘8’ numbers and the slanted serif/foot on the ‘1’. Once again I can’t find this font anywhere in my online font-finder website. Maybe it’s custom or just very obscure. There are dots used to indicate orientation on the 6 and 9 faces. The d10s have edged waists and all edges and vertices are very sharp. (hence ‘sharp edge resin’)

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 22mm (Point->Point) 26.3mm

Where did they come from: Crystalmaggie on Etsy I love their dice

How much did they cost:  $40

Material / color: Purple and black resin with holofoil inclusions

Quality: Excellent. These are beautifully made dice, as is to be expected from Everything Dice. No scratches, dings, or other defects.

Readability: Pretty good. From the desktop: excellent! From 4′ away on the floor: very good. From 8′ away on the floor: not very good.

Value: Great. $40 for a set of nice sharp edge resin dice that look this good and numbers that compliment the inclusions? <chefs kiss>

Overall Rating: 9/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 8 rolls

Ten d20 rolls: 13, 8, 6, 13, 7, 1, 11, 15, 11, 9 (9.4 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 15, 14, 11, 13, 12, 14 (79 total!) An agreeable Half-Elf fighter from a travelling band who never passes up a change to say, ‘I told you so.’

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

Random Tables rolls:

Memorable Goblins: 21 – Tipy-Tap – One of the toughest goblins you’ve ever met. Picked on by other goblins as a child for his name, often joking about his “tiny tipy-tap feet” lead him to doing nothing but leg days. Now he’s got legs like tree trunks. Can squash another goblins head without even trying. Unfortunately his arms never got much workout so he barely has the strength to swing a sword.

Devilish Deals – For a Price: 71 -The Wolf-Skin Cloak – Make a deal with the devil to gain an enchanted wolf-skin cloak that grants its wearer increased strength, speed and heightened senses.

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way

Final Thoughts: The gold of the font really goes well with the yellow/gold/green colors in the holofoil inclusions. This is one of the very few times that gold numbers were the exact right choice. I can’t think of another color that would pop on the purple yet match the inside of the dice so well. I like it that the font is relatively big for the size of each face and that the shapes are so clean with their edges. These dice seem like they’d be relatively simple to make with only 2 colors of resin and one little bit of holofoil to stuff inside of each die. They end up looking fantastic. I’d say that the little dab of black resin is completely unnecessary and that the dice would look even cleaner without it.

I’ve had these at the table for a few sessions recently and I am rotating them out of my dice tray now because they’ve been rolling awfully for me. I don’t want a set of dice that are going to roll high (or low) every time but I felt like this set barely ever rolled high. Just medium-low and low so they’re going back into the big dice condo in favor of the super-basic blue metal set that I reviewed 2 weeks ago that had such a high 4d6 drop-1 total (88). I try to rotate my “bring to the table” dice fairly regularly just to give myself a chance to use all of my dice. There are a couple of chonks that stay around for a while because I really like them and I don’t have *that* many chonks or single d20s to choose from. There’s also one set that I’m keeping at the table for thematic reasons. (the snowy mountain set from way back in review 005 “Move Any Mountain”) because my party is currently in Icewind Dale. I think we’ll be there for a while and I’ve thought of buying a few more ice/snow themed sets of dice but I’m trying to scale back my dice purchases a little bit currently. (says the guy who is waiting on 4 different dice orders from 4 different places to arrive).
