030: Caribbean Blue

When you don’t want the best dice but you don’t want the worst either

Name: Blue enamel metal dice set

Description: A set of sharpish edge metal dice with lovely medium blue enamel faces. The numbers are very slightly raised from the die body so that they poke out from the enamel on the faces. The set uses a font that looks like TNR but are done in “Oldstyle Figures“, meaning that they have varying heights and alignments vertically. The ones look like a capital I (“eye”). There are very slight serifs on most of the numbers. There are underbars used to indicate orientation on the 6 and 9 faces. The d10s have beveled waists for a change and all edges and vertices are slightly sharp. The dice are somewhat plain with an old looking font. They are a little smaller than most of my dice. They feel like they’re old-school metal dice.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 19.05mm (Point->Point) 23.66mm

Where did they come from: A-a-a-a-amazon

How much did they cost:  $20

Material / color: Metal (Zinc?) in a dark silver color bright blue enamel faces

Quality: Good. They’re not amazing, there are some edge issues where the enamel meets the metal edges and some bumps in the enamel faces but good overall craftspersonship.

Readability: Quite good. I did the rug test (throw it a few feet away on the rug next to my desk) and I could almost read the number from 7′ away. I could read it fine from 4′ away.

Value: Good value. They’re not very fancy dice but slipping Bezos a $20 for them is a good deal.

Overall Rating: 8/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 18 rolls

Ten d20 rolls: 18, 9, 14, 7, 6, 2, 6, 8, 20, 1 (9.1 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 15, 12, 14, 17, 14, 16 (88 total!!) A Wary Halfling Bard from an underground network of dragon caves who only sleeps with the lights on. (Halfling Bard from whothefuckismydndcharacter.com FTW!)

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

Random Tables rolls:

Druidic Treasures: 31 – Encyclopedia Druidica: These books are a compendium of knowledge from the natural world (Increase your Intelligence or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20). Any checks that are nature related just seem easier to you.

“I Search the body” complications: 79 – On closer examination the body’s clothes are organic parts of it.

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way

Final Thoughts: I bought these very early on in my Goblin-hood. They were one of the first sets of metal dice that I bought. Back then there were so many different sets of dice that I wanted to buy so when I bought these, I barely used them before buying more dice and moving on to other dice. At the time I bought them, these were pretty cool dice and I was pretty happy with them. As my collection grew, these seemed more and more pedestrian and plain compared to newer metal dice I was acquiring. I am having a little bit of a renaissance moment with them now and I think I’ll be bringing them to my next in-person session. Apparently I should have used them to create my character with that set of 4d6 drop 1 stats I rolled up above. I’ve only rolled higher than 88 total points in one other review.

Overall these are nice dice. Not fancy, not shabby. They’re not going to put a smile or a frown on your face when you pull them out. They’re a nice shade of blue but fairly plain otherwise. They’re easy on the eyes and wont hurt you with sharp edges when you hold them. You could do a lot worse than having a set of these in your dice tray.
