Opinions about my math rocks

015: Sixty Miles An Hour

One Hundred Duck sized horses, one Horse sized duck or just an awesome d6?

Name: d60

Description: A 60-sided die, precision milled from solid aircraft grade aluminum, hard anodized and laser marked. Numbered to use as a d6: each number 1-6 appears on ten faces so it works like any other d6. Includes premium zippered case.

The numbers are white in a standardish (Avenir-adjacent) font. The sides are numbered 1-6 (ten times over) with the number six in reversed colors inside a solid hexagon.

Size (d20):  37mm

Where did it come from: Flying Horseduck https://flyinghorseduck.com

How much did it cost: $48, reduced from the list price of: $69 (go ahead…) with a holiday sale coupon.

Material / color:  Machined aircraft-grade Aluminum. Hard anodized black.

Quality:  Flawless! There are no blemishes or dings. The edges are sharp, the numbering is printed without smudge or scratch. It’s machined extremely well.

Readability: Great. White numbers on flat black metal look great and are easy to read anywhere you roll this die.

Value: Good… I guess? This is a ton to spend on what ends up being a single d6. It’s definitely a boutique piece. I could buy maybe a dozen metal d6 dice for this price but this d60 is much more fun to roll. I have a gorgeous d120 from this same dice maker that’s also machined aluminum. . I did not struggle with the decision to buy this die. This is only the 3rd Aluminum die that I’ve bought. I’d say that I currently have a lack of Aluminum dice (I’d love to get a nice full set of Aluminum dice) and these dice are beautiful. The only thing that would have made me buy it quicker was if these came in colors other than black.

Overall Rating: 10/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20 6: 13 rolls

Ten rolls: 2, 2, 4, 5, 4, 2, 2, 1, 3, 2 (2.7 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 9, 15, 15, 10, 9, 8 (66 total) A Playful Elf Monk from the Dungeon Inspector’s Guild (local #422) who was brought up to be a librarian

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and Point Buy totals to: 69.

Random Tables rolls: (I’m just going with two rolls here and using the result for the two digits)

Diseases: 65 – Narcoleprosy Your limbs and digits have an extreme tendency to fall asleep in relaxing conditions. If left untreated, your arms, legs, fingers, and toes can become shortened and deformed, as cartilage is absorbed into the body

Things at a Fantasy Circus: 41 – Drunken Geomancers cheering raucously at a pit fight between two ferocious pits.

Final Thoughts: This is a heck of a nice d60. I love that it’s numbered in a non-standard way which makes it very uncommon. I haven’t seen any other dicemakers / stores that make Aluminum d60s, or even dice with more than 20 sides that number them to be used as other shapes. The folks at Flying Horseduck make d60s numbered to use as all other common ttRPG dice. (d4/d6/d8/d10/d%/d12/d20) shapes. A 7 dice set of these d60s would only run you $537 including tax and S/H. Maybe I’ll hold off on buying a set of 7… I think it would be confusing trying to figure out which d60 was which die at a glance. Again, if they only offered them in nice colors other than black…

How cool would it feel sitting down at the table of your weekly game and unzipping 7 or 8 of these chonky d60s (gotta have 2 d20s for advantage/disadvantage) to use as your set of dice for the session? I’d want to get a nice big rolling tray with slightly higher sides for these things to knock around in. I love the ceremony and pomp of getting my D&D stuff ready just before an in-person session starts. Taking out the papers/notebooks/pencils/dice/mini/ etc… and arranging it all around you after sitting down… Unzipping 8 individual single-die cases to take out your stupid-expensive non-standard gorgeous aluminum set of d60 dice…. I can feel the endorphins already.

Despite the somewhat low (below average) set of rolls earlier (2.7 avg) I really like using this die as the martial arts die for the Monk that I play in my weekly in-person campaign. The only downside of this d60 is that it predictably wanders quite a bit when you roll it and takes a while to settle down. If it weren’t precision milled Aluminum the wandering would be much worse. What’s not to like about this chonky metal boy?
