034: Last Rose of Summer

Meteor Storm? Fireball? Lightning Bolt? Rogue Sneak Attack? These dice have got you covered

It’s like they were made to stack.

Name: DNDND D6 Flower Metal dice set 6 PCS

Description: A set of six metal d6 dice in gunmetal gray with pink and green flower designs etched that wrap around all sides. The numbers are also etched and inked white. The font used for the numbers is similar to Times New Roman (TNR). The ‘6’ faces have underbars to indicate their orientation and assure the player that they didn’t somehow roll a nine on a d6. All edges and vertices are very sharp. These dice are predictably heavy. These are kind of faux fancy dice. They aren’t very expensive and they look like they should be.

Size: (Face->Face) 15.9 mm (Point->Point) 27.1 mm

Where did they come from: That rainforest basin place based in Seattle by way of China

How much did they cost:  $22 for a set of 6d6, so the two sets I bought were $44 + tax

Material / color: Metal (Zinc? I’m going with Zinc) in gunmetal gray with pink and green flower designs and white numbers

Quality: Surprisingly good for where I bought them. Clean lines and sharp edges, very few dings. The flowers are vibrantly colored and precisely etched. There are even little branches/stems going to each blossom as well as negative space in the center of the larger blossoms. There are some flaws on the edges and a few (very small) bits of sloppy ink but overall these are better than I expected given the price.

Readability: Incredibly good readability. Dark gray dice with a bold white font makes them easy on the eyes. They passed the 8′ rug test so I tried the 15′ rug test and I could just make out the result of my roll 15 feet away on the floor. Top marks here.

Value: They are a great value for a set of six matching metal d6 dice with clean designs

Overall Rating: 9/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 6: 1
Attempts needed to roll an 18 on 4d6: 12 (that’s way less than I thought it would take)

Ten d6 rolls: 5, 6, 3, 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 3, 2(3.2 avg)

Meteor Swarm Damage you’d take on a failed save: 142
20d6 fire damage: 68
20d6 bludgeoning damage: 74

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 9, 11, 13, 13, 10, 16 (72 total) An assertive Dwarf Paladin from the “Class Act” traveling circus who has an irrational fear of cats.

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and Point Buy totals to: 69. I used the old stand by “4d6 drop one” method

Random Tables rolls (rolling 24d6):
Simple Forgotten Realms Treasures: 78 – A magical mace with an emerald set in the hilt. It glows faintly when held and grants its wielder +1 to their attack rolls.

Stuff a blacksmith makes: 84- Gardening Hoes

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way)

Final Thoughts: The GM of my in-person D&D game told us each to bring “a bunch of d6s” for the most recent session. I have loads of dice in sets but I don’t have any matching d6 dice. The closest I have are the five d6s from the “legendary metal dice sets” I bought from Easy Roller some time ago. They’re all different metals but have the same font and ink color. They’d kind of match but not exactly. Instead I decided to shop for specific sets of d6 dice. I found that there aren’t that many places that sell sets of d6 dice that have numbers on them instead of pips (those little dots that the dice from your Monopoly and Sorry! board games have). I didn’t want dice with pips so my choices were either stuffing a $20 into Bezos’ palm for these or paying more than twice as much for a set of fancy sharp edge resin d6s from a place like Everything Dice. It turns out that I already have a set of dice with this design: post 006: (Nothing But) Flowers. so I opted to go with these.

These are quite lovely dice, the bold pink and green of the flowers and stems really stands out against the dark gray of the metal. They’re very precisely made, especially for Amazon’s China warehouses. The font is clean and easy to read, they’re heavy, they come to a stop quickly in the dice tray, and they were very reasonably priced for a set of six. Rolling all 12 of them in one handful feels fantastic.

Initially I was just going to buy six of them but for $22, it seemed like a good idea to buy two sets of six just in case I needed “a lot of d6s” for the D&D session. We ended up needing the d6s for some in-game gambling at a local festival day where people are picked to die at the end of the day. Losing at the games of chance gives you additional entries into the death lottery. I gambled very poorly (the games were not in the players’ favor) but luckily none of my party was picked to die when the numbers were drawn. Now I have a nice pile of matching d6s that I can use to roll up characters, build small walls with, put under wobbly table legs, use as fishing weights, scare off owls… I could do all sorts of things with these dice.

  1. […] and colored gold. They have the same orchid-ish flower designs of the 12d6 dice I reviewed in post 034: The Last Rose of Summer. I really liked the look / feel of those d6 sets so I thought I’d get the same dice in gold. […]
