Opinions about my math rocks

110: Fine Time

A 10/10 chonk d20 that I got for free. D&D friends are the best!

Name: Clear Resin Chonk Snow Globe d20

Description: This is a chonk d20 made of clear resin with a liquid center. The center contains glitter in standard confetti shape, and snowflake shape with a tiny bit of mica powder as well. All of the glitter/powder is a silvery rainbow color. The die has recessed numbers inked in silver. The font is again not easy to identify. The closest matches to this font I’ve found so far are Texturina and Cloister Black. Neither of those are great matches other than being Gothic fonts with a couple of similar elements. The 6 and 9 faces use underbars to indicate their orientation.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 52.81 mm (Point->Point) 66.43 mm (It’s rare for a die to be larger than it’s advertised size. Bravo!)

Where did it come from: A friend bought it from a local game store (YAY! Support your LGS!!!)

How much did it cost: $0 (I won it)

Material / color: clear resin, liquid center, rainbow glitter & snowflakes, silver ink

Quality: Very Good

Readability: Not great readability with silver numbers on clear resin with silver glitter in the center

Value: Excellent

Overall Rating: 10/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 25

Fifty One Hundred d20 rolls: 5, 7, 5, 20, 13, 8, 3, 3, 20, 18, 18, 16, 9, 9, 12, 15, 9, 15, 14, 4, 12, 14, 10, 12, 12, 13, 8, 10, 16, 6, 20, 3, 11, 6, 7, 3, 15, 7, 5, 9, 4, 3, 16, 16, 14, 17, 8, 15, 20, 3, 16, 4, 7, 16, 3, 5, 13, 19, 19, 3, 4, 13, 5, 19, 14, 1, 1, 17, 14, 15, 10, 4, 5, 17, 3, 9, 4, 20, 19, 2, 14, 18, 5, 9, 18, 3, 20, 1, 11, 1, 11, 7, 16, 11, 7, 4, 7, 8, 2, 8

Chi Squared: 15.20 **
Result: Balanced

6d20 drop 1s and 2s stat block: 12, 7, 11, 8, 8, 18 (64 total) An attentive Tiefling Paladin from the most vile of swamps who doesn’t have time for all this prophecy bullshit

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

A 20th level Paladin with a 20 CHA and the Savage Attacker feat trying to maximize the damage on one strike with a Greatsword (flame tongue):

Greatsword: 2d6
Flametongue: 2d6
Divine Smite: 5d8 (5th level)
Improved Divine Smite: 1d8

On a hit: 2d6 + 2d6 + 5d8 + 1d8 + 5 = 43 damage
On a Crit: (2d6 + 2d6 + 5d8 + 1d8) x 2 + 5 = 115 damage

I’m sure there are ways that I could boost the damage even higher, especially if I were a little creative with multi-classing.

Random Tables rolls (6d20):

Angels: – 46 Ellandria – an angel with red tipped feathers on her wings, carrying a white staff made from the Horn of a high ranking demon, she is called upon when higher demons wreck havoc on planes of the mortals.

Spell Corruptions: – 47 Your spell duplicates and also targets your location as well.

Final Thoughts: Hey look, it’s a gorgeous chonk d20 with a snow globe vibe that I didn’t even pay for! I actually won this absolute unit… by rolling a ’10’… I rolled the last ’10’ of the night (on a d20 check) at a recent in-person D&D session and this lovely math rock was mine for the taking.

I kind of started a thing at my in-person D&D game. Several sessions ago I brought a small box containing a d20 with me to the game that I put on the table at the beginning of the night and said: “Whoever rolls that last natural 20 of the night wins this die.” During our session, every time someone would roll a 20 (on a d20) one of us would move this box with the mystery die in it in around the table so that it was in front of that person. At the end of the night, whoever had rolled that last natural 20 went home with the die. Since that session, this fun game has been repeated by myself and a few other people at the table with prizes which have mostly (but not always) been dice.

It’s honestly surprising to me how generous the people at my table are with each other. We all bring snacks to share, the people with 3d printers bring in 3d printed things to give to others, people have also brought holiday gifts (I got a Gelatinous Cube xmas ornament!!) and other fun things that are D&D related or that go with each of our specific characters (for me: an elephant reading on a toilet!). I love this so much. It’s not just me (the Dice Goblin) bringing in dice to give away, it’s everyone at the table showing each other how much they value the company, camaraderie and joy that our silly little role-play game bring us. I’m always trying to be generous with these folks, especially our GM who invites us into his really, really cool basement game room to play and puts in a LOT of effort to make the adventure fun including making/using 3d terrain and miniatures, coming up with fun scenarios to guide us through and ‘coloring outside the lines‘ when it comes to the plot/story/adventure that we’re currently going through. It’s something I look forward to all week.

Back to this lovely chonk. It’s big and very well made with clean lines / edges / vertices. The font is the same gothic font that Viridian uses for their big silicon chonk d20s like you’ll see in post #114 “Mint Car”. The silver ink on this one is a little hard to see with the clear resin background. I think that the ink color choice works aesthetically for the winter / snow globe vibe that this d20 is absolutely nailing though so full marks on that. I love that the liquid center is so big and easy to see. I don’t normally like dice with big confetti size glitter in them but that’s what an actual snow globe has in it. For liquid center dice I prefer the fine mica powder in the center but if this one had fine mica powder, the center would be completely obscured and the tiny snowflake shaped confetti in the center of this die would be lost in the storm.

As for rolling this chonk, It’s a little bouncy to roll and slides a lot at the end of most rolls due to its weight. It’s a die where you need a bit more rolling room to really get it to rotate a few times before it settles so that you’re not just throwing a skid-roll that comes out of your hand, lands and skids to a stop without turning over.

I would strongly encourage you to get one of these if you’re in the market for a chonk d20 for your game. Even moreso if you’re looking for something with a holiday season vibe. The bottom line is: finding a good group of people to play games with on a regular basis is everything. Especially when you can occasionally win a gorgeous chonk d20. (Thanks Prisma!)

** I’m adding a new value to the reviews called “Chi Squared” which is a calculation of the difference between of the number of times each result was rolled in the d20 roll test compared to the number of times each result would be rolled in a perfectly equal roll test. (perfectly equal means every result comes up the same number of times, or [total number of rolls / number of sides on the die]) Chi Squared gives a sense of how far away from the statistical average the rolls during the d20 roll test are. It’s not a perfect measure of a die’s balance and fairness but it’s a good step in that direction. More information about die fairness / balance roll testing can be found here: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/70802/how-can-i-test-whether-a-die-is-fair
