098: The Perfect Kiss

The temptation for me to eat this set of dice is higher than usual

Name: Frosted Rainbow Gummy Dice Set Multi-faceted Style

Description: This is a slightly larger than standard set of sharp edge resin dice. The dice have been shaped in a newer style called “multi-faceted”. It’s similar to how gemstones are shaped with all of the vertices and several edges being shaved off. Each die is a different color. The colors are a little bit diffused due to the resin of the die bodies not being completely clear. It makes for a nice almost glowing effect. The numbers are inked in gold.. The font is once again some mis-mash of other styles. It’s got some elements of Times New Roman but a single left-facing Serif on the foot of the 4 which is quite uncommon. I’ve only found Brillante to have that foot on the 4 so far. The dice also have a 6 and 9 where their upper terminal wraps around almost meeting their mid-lines as you’d see on fonts like Los Feliz and Typewriter. Whatever… It’s almost not worth trying to figure out what these franken-fonts are any more. The font is almost unbearably thin. The edges of the dice are fairly sharp and the vertices less-so. The 6 and 9 faces use underbars very close to the bottom of the digits to indicate their orientation. The dice came in a nice cardboard box with foam inserts.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 22.25 mm (Point->Point) 26.28 mm (I believe that the facets make the two widths closer)

Where did they come from: urwizards.com

How much did they cost: $64 (discounted to $54 with my discount code)

Material / color: Clear resin with a different color in the center of each die and numbers inked in gold.

Quality: Very good. They’re lovely but there are demolding lines on every die.

Readability: Poor. The light font in gold is very hard to read from more than a foot away.

Value: Decent. $64 is a lot to spend on sharp edge resin dice but the faceting makes these extra fancy.

11th: 56Fail.
12th: 09 – Success, problems getting solved.
13th: 34Fail.
14th: 51Fail.
15th: 02 – Success again! Maybe my deity likes me

17th: 18 – Fail. Almost!
18th: 20Fail. Still really close!
19th: 04 – Success. How am I so good at this!?
20th: 49 – Success. By this time my deity is on speed dial and always takes my calls (once every 7 days anyway)

Three successes and three more that were two away from succeeding. Damn I’m a well-liked cleric.

Final Thoughts: I have a set of glass dice in this “multi-faceted” style (see post: 044 “Just What I Needed”) which I just love. I’m still a sucker for the standard / traditional shapes but these seem fancier with the gem-cut facets. I love the look of these dice with the slightly opaque clear resin and a little ball of color in the center of each die. The blobs of color in the middle of each die make for a wonderful effect and do give them a little bit of a pastel gummy bear (or gummy vitamin) look. They’re not quite Haribo, but they’re in the same ballpark.

I’m not thrilled with the font though. It’s extremely hard to see because the gold doesn’t contrast enough on the cloudy/clear resin and also because they used such a thin font. I’m sure they’re going for elegant, but readability shouldn’t suffer this much.

Now for the big issue I have with these dice…. Every single die in the set has creases across at least one of the faces from the dice molds. The straight lines that go across the faces (see photos above) are such a distraction once you know that they exist. I’m not terribly surprised that there are quality issues on these dice because they were drop-shipped from China. You place the order on the website, they give you a tracking number, and then 3 weeks or so later the dice show up. The tracking website shows them coming from mainland China. I’m sure they’re mass-produced and quality control isn’t a priority. I’m surprised that the people at URWizards aren’t aware of this (or are willing to accept it?). I’m going to send them a note with photos of the dice and ask what they think about the de-molding lines. Stay tuned loyal reader(s)…

Overall, they’re very pretty dice but poorly executed. I hope to find a resolution with URWizards but I’m not optimistic.

I looked at another set of sharp-edge resin dice that I bought from URWizards about a year ago (see review #050 “The Heat Is On”) and they also have similar mold lines on each die in the set. This doesn’t bode well for buying sharp-edge resin dice from URWizards in the future.

I’ve emailed back and forth with customer support with URWizards and they said that they would send a replacement set of these gummy dice without the lines/creases. That was 3 weeks ago and I haven’t received a tracking number or any further information. Maybe they’re having trouble finding a set of these dice without the mold marks on them. We’ll see what happens…

I can’t recommend buying these dice as is with the mold lines.
