009: Color In Your Life

Experience the colors of the rainbow with this 8 piece sharp edge resin set

Name: Dark Rainbow – 8 piece handmade sharp edge dice set + crystal D4

Description: This is a set of 8 (extra d4 included) sharp-edge resin dice. The resin is dark, and slightly tinted to match the ink color used on the numbers. The font is a very clean non-serif font. The closest I found was Oracle Sans where the 3 has a flat flag on top and the ascender of the 6 and descender of the 9 are straight. The 6 and 9 faces use dots to indicate orientation. The font is inked in a different color of the rainbow for each die. The d10s have edged waists and all edges / vertices are very sharp. The set contains the standard 7 dice plus an extra d4 die (in an exaggerated d8 shape called a “Crystal” d4). The extra d4 is a little smaller than the rest of the set for some reason.

Size (d20):  ~21mm

Where did they come from: Etsy (Seller: KingsDiceShop)

How much did they cost: $55

Material / color:  Resin. Dark gray with a slight color tint to each die that matches the ink color used for the numbers

Quality:  Very good. There are few blemishes and dings with a couple of mold marks. The resin has good but not great clarity. The numbers are cast well but a little sloppy in the inking.

Readability: Almost universally good. The d20 being the only exception. The dark resin with the dark red font makes it difficult to read in dim light.

Value: Decent, not great. I’d expect a set like this to be $45 tops unless you’re paying extra for the brand name, like if for instance… you were buying dice from a gaming furniture company to help their misogynistic CEO buy a new Tesla… I think Dark Elf dice would likely do a better job making this set of dice and would sell them for a slightly lower price. That said, Etsy sellers gotta eat too. I’m glad that they’re out there making dice for me to buy.

Overall Rating: 7/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 38 rolls

Ten d20 rolls:  1, 12, 18, 19, 11, 19, 15, 13, 2, 8 (11.8 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 12, 10, 13, 7, 9, 16 (67 total) A cautious Human Paladin from a silk & spices trade galley who is absolutely astonished by jugglers.

That is a low stat block total. For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and Point Buy totals to: 69.

Random Tables rolls:

Townfolk Gossip: 37 – “Here honey, give me your hand, I, Madame Corella, am an excellent palm reader.”

Unique Medieval Treasures: 52 – A finely worked suit of Mithril armor, inscribed with intricate patterns and glowing faintly in the light. The armor is said to have been crafted by a master smith long ago, and its wearers are granted protection from even the strongest blows

Final Thoughts: I really like the overall look of this set with the tinted dice and their matching colors. They roll well and settle quickly as you’d expect from a sharp edge set. The things that knock this down from a great set to just a good set are: the dark red d20 that I can’t read from across the table. If they’d just gone with a brighter red ink on the numbers, it would have made all the difference. Also, I’d like it if the size of the dice were a little bigger. Basing the set around a 23mm d20 would be perfect. The extra Crystal-shape d4 is also smaller than all of the other dice and seems out of place. It should be closer in size to the d8. Finally, the ink job is a tiny bit gloopy in the numbers but the font they used is fantastic so it’s easy to overlook, especially when you get catch that hint of color in the resin that makes the ink color really pop. I wish they’d used a different color for the extra d4 so that it wasn’t so similar to the d8.

The rainbow of colors in this set makes me want to bring them to my weekly game but when they’re in front of me at the table, I find that I rarely reach for them. Maybe they’re better seen than used? Maybe I’m just a metal dice snob and it’s hard to enjoy the feeling of lighter dice in my super extra strong barbarian hands when I roll. I’ve said it before but if they weren’t literally $600!!! I’d consider getting a set of super-heavy Tungsten dice. I think Tungsten is the heaviest metal that is used for ttrpg dice. There are very view companies that make Tungsten dice and they are never stylish, always just plain unfinished metal. Some day when I get “fuck you” money, I’ll buy a 45mm Tungsten Chonk d20 for $2K. Of course by then inflation will raise that price to $7,500. What’s a goblin to do?
