006: (Nothing But) Flowers

Next up, a nice metal set with pretty wrap-around flowers that catch your eye

Name:  Flower Black Metal Dice Set with Cherry Blossoms

Description: This is a sharp-edge metal set of dice from Amazon (yet again). They are made of metal (likely Zinc) with carved cherry blossom flower designs on the faces. The Cherry Blossoms are painted pink and green and wrap around the faces of the dice. The numbers are white in a TNR-adjacent font. The 6 and 9 faces have underbars to indicate orientation. The d10s have sharp waists and the edges and vertices are all very sharp. Stepping on these would be a horrible mistake.

Size (d20): 20mm

Where did they come from: Amazon, the American arm of China’s GDP.

How much did they cost:  $23 (How can they be so cheap??)

Material / color:  Metal (Zinc) in a blackish silver color with pink and green flowers.

Quality:  Very good. They are sharp and mostly clean. The paint isn’t chipping or bubbling but there are some very small pock marks.

Readability: The white numbers on the dark faces have excellent readability. I can roll a d20 off of the table and see what I rolled as the die settles under the couch across the room.

Value: Unreasonably good value at $23 for a set of dice this clean. These should be 2x the price in a game store. I would be happy if my local game store started buying these and reselling them for $40.

Overall Rating: 8/10 These are smooth, clean, and look fantastic with the bright colors on the dark metal faces. My only wish is that they were a little bigger. This set with a 23mm d20 and the rest of the dice upsized appropriately would be fantastic.

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20:  26 rolls

Ten d20 rolls:  4, 4, 2, 12, 2, 14, 20, 2, 3, 18 (8.1 avg) I rolled 2 more sets of 10 rolls and got similar results. I’m betting this d20 is not evenly weighted. (I should stop buying cheap dice)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 13, 13, 13, 15, 15, 15 (83 total): An Attentive Tiefling Cleric from the mean un-cobbled streets of the city who suffers from nosebleeds.

(That’s both a very strange stat block to roll in that order and 83 points for an initial 4d6 drop 1 stat block roll is quite high.

Random Tables rolls:

Masks: 80 – Mask of Shadows: A black velvet mask with eye holes and no detailed features. The wearer can use the hide action as a bonus action while in dim light or darkness. Once per day the wearer may cast Gaseous Form on itself.

Interesting Forest Locations: 30 – The slimy tracks of a giant snail. If followed, the creature is encountered trying to devour a humongous mushroom. Who knows what kind of treasure it might have accidentally swallowed.

Final Thoughts: These (of course) looked different in the Amazon product photos. They looked black on the product page but they’re really more of a gun metal gray. They are still very pretty and the colors of the flowers, stems, and numbers really pop. The visibility is terrific and I really like the way that the stems wrap around the faces of the dice.

As I roll them, I have the suspicion that they’re not balanced which is frustrating but probably very common among cheap dice made in China. It would be interesting to use a rolling tower and see which of my dozens of d20s consistently roll high or low. I’ll get right on that…

Well, no more buying dice until I get some of the reviews out of the way. I have a huge list of dice to review. Even at one review a week it’ll take me into next year to get through what I have already. Well, if I find a really nice looking set of dice that matches the Harengon Monk that I’m currently playing or a set with a rhomboid d12, I might have to buy them. Thems the rules of the Dice Goblin.
