047: Somebody’s Watching Me

I said I’d probably get another set of these dice so here they are…

They stack well enough

Name: Oukelanwo Liquid Core Dragon Eye DND dice set

Description: A set of sharp edge resin dice in dark gray resin with liquid centers and a floating eyeball in each die. The floating eyeball is weighted so that the iris always faces up. The floating eyeball is black with a purple and white iris and elongated thin pupils similar to what you’d see in a movie or artist’s depiction of a dragon’s eyeball. The font is slightly gothic with bulged terminals on most of the open digits. The font is inked in silver. All edges and vertices are sharp. The d10s have edged waists and the d4 is a “crystal” shape instead of the standard 3-sided pyramid shape. The d4 also has the numbers oriented to be viewed when the die lands on the smaller half of the pyramid with the long side pointing up which is not how the die lands 90% of the time when rolled. It’s an odd choice that I’ve seen on most (but not all) of the crystal d4s I own. Underbars are used for the 6 and 9 faces. They are available in 12 different color combinations.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 21.5 mm (Point->Point) 26.75 mm

Where did they come from: Amazon (hangs head)

How much did they cost: $26

Material / color: Dark gray resin with black and purple eyeballs inside.

Quality: Very good. No obvious flaws / defects / mold lines

Readability: good. not great. I could see it from 4 feet away but not very well from 8 feet away

Value: Great. I hate to say it but Amazon has some decent dice for very low prices. China delivers.

Overall Rating: 8/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 14 rolls

Ten d20 rolls: 4, 7, 16, 7, 15, 7, 12, 19, 4, 17 (11.1 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 10, 11, 16, 15, 14, 12 (78 total) A Pensive Half-Orc Sorcerer from an island long thought to be uninhabited who hates being made to wait

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

Casting Finger Of Death:
You send negative energy coursing through a creature that you can see within range, causing it searing pain. The target must make a Constitution saving throw. It takes 7d8 + 30 necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

A humanoid killed by this spell rises at the start of your next turn as a zombie that is permanently under your command, following your verbal orders to the best of its ability.

Creatures take 62 radiant damage on a failed save and 31 on success.

(This is another excuse for using random tables and rolling dice)

Random Tables rolls:

NPC Mannerisms: – 25: Says one thing only to instantly counter it himself e.g. “I have a black hat, no wait. It’s blue”.

Secrets revealed with Detect Thoughts: – 97: A mocking high-pitched repetition of what anyone nearby is saying, followed by “Jackass”.

(I’m getting these random tables at: https://d100tables.com by the way

Final Thoughts:
In post #42: “Black Dragon Fighting Society” I reviewed a set of these same dice in a different colorway (with a nicer font) and at the end of the review said that writing the review would likely inspire me to get another set of these in a different color. Well, here you go.

Overall I like these dice and I like the color and design of the floating eyeball in the center but the resin is much darker than it appeared in the nice studio photos on the item description on scAmazon. I just need to stop shopping there for dice (so should you). More often than not I’m lured by their low prices but ultimately disappointed in the quality of the dice that they send and often end up giving them away. (I give a lot of dice away).

The upsides for these dice: they have very smooth faces, and the silvery half-matches and half-contrasts with the white in the irises of the dragon eyes. I like the crystal d4 shape and the design of the eyeballs is very appealing. The price is very low for what you’re getting. The drawbacks are: they are harder to read than I had hoped and the font is a little bit too irregular for my tastes with the near-closures on the 5, 6, and 9 digits.

I bought these mostly based on price and because I liked the green/yellow set of these from my previous review. If you’re looking for a cheap set of sharp edge resin dice, you could do far far worse than this set. You could also buy much nicer dice (at higher cost) like I did from URWizards a few minutes ago just before coming back to finish writing this review. You’ll see what I bought in a month or two given the current backlog and the 4 other sets of Kickstarter dice that should show up in the mail soon. You might think that I have a “dice problem” but you need to turn around that negative mindset and look at this as me having a “dice solution”. My only “problem” is deciding which dice to bring with me to the table each session. The sets I bring do rotate quite frequently but I have and abundance of sets to choose from.

Also, happy turkey day in the US. Have you bought your dice Advent calendar yet?
