045: Silver Springs

Look! An underrated set of metal dice with rainbow spirals. Who doesn’t like that?

Name: Rainbow Rail dice set

Description: A set of sharp sliver brushed metal dice with a rainbow colored spiraled stripe wrapping around them. These dice are what I would consider “average” size for TTRPG dice. They have a carved font that is similar to courier that has variable thickness strokes and only some numbers are serifed. There are odd contradictions like the flag (top stroke) of the 7 having a serif but not the flag of the 5. I always struggle identifying fonts on dice. I have yet to find a good online resource that can help identify fonts when I only have numbers to go by. Identifont is the best site I’ve found so far. The font on these dice is colored in the same rainbow pallete that the spiraled stripe uses. . The d10s have very slightly beveled waists and all edges / vertices are quite sharp otherwise. The 6 and 9 faces use underbars to indicate orientation.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 19.2 mm (Point->Point) 23.8 mm

Where did they come from: Etsy (Seller: ViridianGaming)

How much did they cost: $23 (+S/H)

Material / color: Brushed metal silver with rainbow iridescent stripes

Quality: Very good. Clean lines

Readability: passable. I can read them at the right angle on the table next to me and barely read them when they’re on the floor at my feet.

Value: Great. These are underpriced. They should be $35 online or $40-$45 if you found them in a game store.

Overall Rating: 8/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 38 rolls

Ten d20 rolls: 20, 12, 18, 8, 15, 11, 6, 3, 3, 14 (11.0 avg)

4d6 drop 1 stat block: 12, 12, 8, 18, 16, 11 (77 total) An unstable Half-Elf Wizard from a village without a tavern who lost their sense of smell in a bar fight

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

Casting the Sunburst spell:
Brilliant sunlight flashes in a 60-foot radius centered on a point you choose within range. Each creature in that light must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 12d6 radiant damage and is blinded for 1 minute. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn’t blinded by this spell. Undead and oozes have disadvantage on this saving throw.

Creatures take 53 radiant damage on a failed save and 26 on success.

(This is another excuse for using random tables and rolling dice)

Random Tables rolls:

New planes of Existence: – 51: The Reflection. A plane of existence most used for banishing intelligent sentient beings. This realm is composed of countless mirrors in different shapes and forms that reflects the viewers nightmares of their twisted selves. You don’t have to eat or breathe in the Reflection and whenever die here somehow, you came back to life through a random mirror. However the body of yours now becomes the reflection of you in that particular mirror.

City Encounters for Level 1 adventurers – 78: Two Owlbears wander into the city, causing havoc and destroying property as they go. Citizens are fleeing in fear and the guards are trying to contain them with a mixture of force and caution.

Final Thoughts: These dice were bought for my youngest when we were playing a Star Wars themed TTRPG. Her character was a species called a “Togorian” which is a large muscular feline warrior species (native to the planet Togoria). Her Togorian had silvery colored fur and she wanted a set of dice that was silvery with some color. She likes colorful things such as rainbows so this set ticked all the boxes for her when we were searching for dice online. I’m always going to feed the inner dice goblin in my kids so of course I got her a set of dice specifically for her character even though SW5E ended up not being a very fun TTRPG to play and we didn’t stick with it for very long.

These dice are very neat and well made. They’re clean and the font is as big as possible on the faces of the dice. The color scheme is very nice with the rainbow pastels that give sort of an oil-slick feel to them but the color is limited to the numbers and the spiraled stripes. I don’t like the size of these dice much with my with daughter’s smaller hands they probably felt like the right size to her. I would probably get a set of these if I could find them in a larger size, say based on a 21mm – 24mm d20. At only $23 for this set, they’re a steal. I’d pay twice that for a set in a larger size. These dice roll well and settle quickly which I very much appreciate. The only downside I can think of is that they’re hard to read unless you view them from a good angle. The rainbow colors blend into each other and make reading your roll difficult. I’m glad that my daughter is so fond of them and I hope they bring her good memories when she finds them with her other TTRPG stuff when she comes home from college years in the future and notices that her former bedroom has become a fully-decorated gaming room.
