041: Third Eye

What if you rolled an insight check and saw an eyeball staring at you?

I love the detail of the iris

Name: Extra Large D20 – Liquid Core Moving Eye

Description: A large sharp-edge resin d20 made of dark gray translucent resin with a liquid core and a large eyeball floating inside. The eyeball has a dark green tint to it’s iris and a black pupil. The numbers use a font in the Helvetica ballpark and are inked in a sparkly royal blue. Dots indicate orientation on the 6 and 9 faces. The edges and vertices are slightly less sharp than a standard set of sharp-edge resin dice, which again is a good idea given it’s size. The die came in a round tin with a foam insert for protection.

Size:
d20: (Face->Face) 50mm (Point->Point) 61mm

Where did it come from: Fennek and Finch (They make awesome dice)

How much did it cost: $ 40 after a small discount for newsletter subscribers

Material / color: Dark gray translucent resin with a black/green floating eyeball inside

Quality: Excellent

Readability: Very good. The font blends into the iris of the floating eyeball slightly from 8′ away on the rug.

Value: Very good. I would have paid $50 – $55 without batting an eye.

Overall Rating: 10/10

Attempts needed to roll a natural 20: 39 rolls

Ten d20 rolls: 13, 11, 20, 20, 17, 6, 3, 19, 1, 11 (12.1 avg)

6d20 drop <3 stat block: 19, 6, 10, 9, 11, 15 (70 total) A thoughtful Half-Elf Paladin from the worse brothel in town who can’t stand the sight of blood

For reference: the Standard Array method totals to: 72 and the Point Buy method totals to: 69.

Two attacks with advantage for a 1st level Paladin (+4 strength, +2 PB):
Attack 1: 20 & 20 (!!!) result: 26 critical hit!
Attack 2: 1 & 8 result: 14 possibly still a hit for a cr 1 (or less) monster.

(This is another excuse for using random tables and rolling dice)

Random Tables rolls: (I rolled 5d20 and added it up)

Side Quest Hooks: 55 – Kobolds have been attacking the town. All wearing similar regalia and a matching symbol. a raving man claims to have escaped from the kobolds’ lair. He describes a terrible dragon as the source of worship for the kobolds. The dragon is really a pseudo-dragon with delusions of grandeur, trained in illusion magic and has duped the kobolds into gathering a hoard for him.

Rare Forgotten Realm Spells: 29 – Unerring Bolt – A spell that creates a bolt of arcane energy, which flies with perfect accuracy and speed towards its target, dealing 1d6 force damage per caster level (maximum 15d6). This spell cannot be dodged or blocked by mundane means.

Final Thoughts: I didn’t know that these dice existed and then found them one day while perusing other dice on Fennek & Finch’s website and learned quickly that this were something that I absolutely had to have. Liquid center plus chonk, plus big creepy eyeball? Also in a cool dark color scheme??? Yes please! They’re offered at a very good price for what I’d consider kind of fancy big dice.

I don’t use this d20 often at the table. It’s kind of a pain to pack up and bring to an in-person game because I keep it in the provided tin which just takes up that much more space. I gave up bringing my dice jail so that I could make more room for this thonker. I try to only use this die for “big” in-game rolls: Ultra-important skill checks, saving throws, or death saves if I ever have to roll any. I keep this die hidden away in it’s metal tin during the game session and then at the right moment I take it out of the tin and throw it down in my dice tray like a masked hero coming out of a phone booth in costume for the big fight scene. I like the reactions I get from other players when I roll this die acknowledging the gravitas that this big guy brings to the in-game moment.

At my previous in-store D&D 5e campaign, one of the other players who was just starting to find his dice-goblin legs showed up with a full set of regular-sized dice with this same design. They were pretty cool but I think with the big chonk, you just get that much more detail in you floating eyeballs when they’re jumbo sized and you can really see them. The blue font is a very nice touch, it pairs well with the dark gray / green look of the die. The only thing I wonder about is how much the floating eyeball (weighted slightly to keep the eye looking upward) is affecting the rolls. I get it that not all dice (heck, hardly any dice) will be evenly weighted but when the inclusion in a die is this large compared to the die’s outer diameter and this inclusion can freely rotate in any direction, it gives me even more reason so suspect that the two 20s that I rolled back-to-back above maybe weren’t as natural as they would be on other dice. I have no complaints about this die though. Ten out of ten! Would maybe buy again. (How many liquid core chonk d20s with eyeballs inside does a goblin need? One so far.
